Job Title: Research Assistant I - Molecular Neurobiology Laboratory, Dr. Nicola Allen

Status: Regular Full Time

Position Description:

Position is responsible for assisting two projects investigating non-neuronal brain cells called astrocytes:

  1. development of astrocytes;
  2. how astrocytes affect the progression of neurodegenerative disorders.

Duties include harvesting brain tissue, processing brain tissue for analysis, tissue sectioning, immunohistochemistry, confocal microscope imaging, molecular biology including cloning and analysis of RNA. Must be able to work independently after the initial training period.



  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.


  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences with a Neuroscience component.



  • 0-2 years of experience as a lab technician and/or equivalent related experience.
  • Demonstrate experience in Immunohistochemical analysis of brain tissue.
  • Demonstrate experience in Molecular biology including knowledge of cloning, Microscopy and Mouse handling.
  • Demonstrated experience and application of molecular biology knowledge preferably in biochemistry and cell culture.
  • Demonstrated experience with general lab maintenance, including cleaning, stocking supply inventory, and ensuring the maintenance of a sterile environment.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be willing to work in an animal-related research environment.
  • Satisfactory completion of the Institute’s background investigation.
  • Willing to work an adjusted schedule when research needs require it.

Physical Requirements:

This position requires constant grasping, hearing, seeing, talking and adjusting focus.
