The University of Wyoming’s Communication and Journalism Department (COJO) and Haub School of Environment & Natural Resources are searching to fill an assistant professor position in visual communication in the environment. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in graphic design, web design, social media, and related topics for COJO, and design thinking and sustainable design for the Haub School. Other job duties include research/creative work, service, and chairing master’s student theses and projects. Preference will be given toward candidates who also have a background in qualitative and environmental research skills. The position will begin August 2024 and will be 75% COJO and 25% Haub School.
The Communication and Journalism Department is comprised of nine full-time faculty members, 200 undergraduate students majoring in either journalism or communication, and 30 master’s degree students. The Haub School is a growing academic unit that includes six undergraduate and graduate degree programs that serve more than 400 students, the Ruckelshaus Institute that conducts innovative outreach, and 40 core faculty and staff. The Haub School’s faculty maintain active research or creative programs that address environmental and natural resources questions from both disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Teach a 2/3 course load for the academic year
• Maintain active scholarly research or creative projects that meet tenure-track standards
• Mentor graduate students for their thesis or professional projects
• Provide service to the COJO Department, Haub School, college, and university
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
§ Ph.D. in Journalism or Communication (or a related discipline) or MFA in a design-oriented field by the time of hire.
§ Demonstrated expertise in visual communication skills, especially graphic design and web design.
§ Ability to teach courses in graphic design, web design, social media, design thinking, sustainable design and other courses in the field as needed.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
§ Previous college-level teaching experience in courses such as graphic design, web design, social media, design thinking and related courses.
§ Professional experience in fields such as graphic design, web design, social media and other visual communication-related areas, especially from an environmental perspective.
§ Experience with using and teaching the Adobe Creative Suite, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and/or InDesign.
§ Demonstrated interest in science or environmental communication. This can involve participating in EPSCoR, National Science Foundation, or other similar grants.
§ Ability to publish research or do creative projects that meet the research requirements of this tenure-track position.
§ Ability to teach qualitative methods at a graduate level.
