Primary Responsibilities

Provide dynamic collegial leadership to a department with a dedicated faculty and staff. Fulfill the role and responsibilities of a chairperson as defined in the Faculty Handbook, including officially representing the department's interests on- and off-campus, evaluating faculty and staff, managing budgets, providing curricular leadership, and ensuring that the needs of students are met.

Chairperson Assignment: Teaching in the department will be six credit hours per regular term. Of particular interest is expertise in voice disorders, craniofacial anomalies, and anatomy and physiology; however, applicants with expertise in any area represented in the scope of practice within the field of communication sciences and disorders will be considered. Six hours of the teaching load will be devoted to administrative responsibilities:
  • Administration of 7 full-time faculty members, approximately 40-45 full-time graduate students and approximately 95 undergraduate students
  • Oversight of graduate and undergraduate programs in Communication Disorders
  • Development and maintenance of productive relationships with external constituents for externship placements, offsite practicum opportunities, and fundraising initiatives
  • Administration of facilities and budget
  • Administration of department office and supervision of personnel including administrative assistant, graduate assistants, and student workers
  • Demonstration of leadership in keeping with the University's mission
  • Advocating for the department in the academic environment
  • Maintaining current accreditation standards within the master's program in the role of program director

Faculty Responsibilities
  • Teaching (e.g., assigned department courses, advising of students, clinical supervision and student research supervision)
  • Service at the department, college, and university levels
  • Scholarship activities (e.g., professional presentations and publications, grantsmanship)

Required Qualifications

  • PhD or EdD in Communication Sciences and Disorders or related field; Degree must be from a regionally accredited, internationally accredited, or government-certified university
  • Current active Missouri SLP or audiology license or eligibility for Missouri licensure
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology (CCC-SLP or CCC-A) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)
  • Experience in leadership or administration of undergraduate and graduate programs or tenure status at an CAA accredited program
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching, scholarship and service
  • Evidence of involvement in professional organizations
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, staff and community
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of faculty morale and enthusiasm in a collegial working environment

Departmental Information: The Department of Communication Disorders includes 7 full-time faculty members serving both undergraduate and graduate students. The graduate program is accredited by the CAA. The department website may be accessed at:

The Center for Speech and Hearing is associated with the department's programs and is located adjacent to the Department of Communication Disorders offices. The Center for Speech and Hearing Clinic Coordinator holds a faculty appointment and reports to the chairperson.

The Department of Communication Disorders is housed within the College of Education, Health and Human Studies. In addition to the Department of Communication Disorders, the departments within the college are, Allied Health, Kinesiology, and Sport Sciences; Child and Family Studies; Elementary, Early and Special Education; Leadership, Middle and Secondary Education; Nursing; and Psychology and Counseling. The college also includes a number of centers and auxiliaries including the University Autism Center, the EDvolution Center, and the University School for Young Children.
