Job Description
Under the supervision of the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences (CAHS) Dean and Director of Land Grant Programs, the Director, Farm Operations provides management, oversight and direction of the daily operations of the Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) Farm. This position is responsible for taking appropriate action on management decisions related to the Farm and ensuring that projects and farm activities incorporate an integration of all the College' mission areas (research, extension and academics).

This position is funded on grant or restricted funds. Continued employment is contingent on the renewal of grant funding.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensures effective supervision and leadership of the University Farm Operations. Develops and implements the overall business strategy by analyzing existing operations and recommending improvements. Provides operating and output data and performance metrics to administration.
  • Develops, implements and monitors budgets and operations plans to support the mission of the College. Provides farm employees and their resources with guidance, direction, leadership and support necessary to accomplish goals and deliverables. Manages activities of the department in regards to recruiting and selection, hiring and terminating, training, professional development, mentoring, and performance evaluations. Also manages and monitors inventory control and purchasing activities.
  • Develops, promotes and maintains positive working relationships with research, extension and farm personnel for the purpose of enhancing cohesive research and outreach activities. Collaborates with other mission-centric areas to develop an integrated plan of work. Communicates relevant meetings results/proceedings with all farm operations staff.
  • Remains abreast through self-directed professional reading. Prepares publications /technical bulletins for journals, including lay journals, and participates in professional/society meetings. Assists with undergraduate and graduate research where appropriate
  • Leads by example to ensure procedures and protocols are implemented in accordance with established policies and procedures for effective and efficient operation. Partners with the Director of Research Compliance and Undergraduate Research to ensure the farm is in compliance with the College and University procedures, TAMUS policies and regulation and federal/state laws. Supports and maintains a robust Quality Assurance and Safety Program for the farm operations. Serves as one of the primary organizers/contributors to staging of the Annual Agricultural Field Day and other relevant events . Conducts or participates in conducting artificial insemination (AI) or other workshops hosted by the International Goat Research Center (IGRC).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Ten years of related experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective leadership and management of multidisciplinary programs.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to present information clearly and concisely.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree
  • Demonstrated and working knowledge of agricultural skills and farm management to include areas of crops, livestock and hay production.
