Duke University, Nicholas School of the Environment, Professor of the Practice in Business & Environment
The Nicholas School of the Environment (NSOE) at Duke University seeks a Professor of the Practice in Business & Environment to start on or before July 1, 2024. This is a regular rank position with an initial four-year term that is expected to be extended based on performance, successful evaluations, funding availability, and ongoing programmatic needs within the Nicholas School Business & Environment Program. This position is open to candidates at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor of the Practice depending on experience. Applicants should have a DBA or a PhD in a business-relevant field or comparable direct experience in business and education with a focus on one or more of the following areas: corporate sustainability strategy, supply chain management, systems analysis, sustainability operations, sustainable product or service innovation, or marketing/communications as related to corporate sustainability. Professional work experience, including a track record of increasing responsibility in the private sector working on corporate environmental sustainability or environmental science, is highly desirable.
A key element of this position will be to provide thought leadership in sustainable business practices supported by excellence in "practice-focused" research or industry engagement so as to be recognized in outlets whose primary audiences are executives and business leaders. While thought leadership may be demonstrated through publications in top-tier peer-reviewed academic journals, other industry-oriented activities will also be valued including: ongoing consulting activities with industry leaders, contributions to standards setting, participation in industry groups and sustainability coalitions, corporate education, and development of industry standards of practice.
Responsibilities include: (1) teaching up to 3 courses in NSOE's two-year professional Masters of Environmental Management (MEM) degree program; (2) advising students in the Business & Environment program, which is a concentration under the Nicholas School MEM degree program; (3) advising client-focused Master's Projects for students in the Business & Environment program and potentially students with business interests in NSOE's Master of Forestry program; and (4) administration of the Business & Environment Program.
Specific courses will include an introductory course on business fundamentals (marketing, operations, accounting, finance, and strategy) and connections of these topics to corporate environmental sustainability and two additional, more specialized advanced electives on topics on the intersection of business and sustainability that will expand the diversity of NSOE's elective offerings. Possibilities include certifications & reporting, green supply chains, sustainable finance or green technology innovation.
