Position Purpose

Come join the team at North Central University.  NCU — a Christian liberal arts college located in the vibrant heart of downtown Minneapolis — is looking for an Assistant Professor of English with vision and fresh ideas about creative writing, composition, critical race theory, and/or literature (any period) to work with our Departments of English, Communications, and Digital Media.  Our ideal candidate doesn’t fit a pre-defined disciplinary “niche”: They have a plan for transformative teaching and community engagement and are waiting for the right school to take a chance on them.  That’s us.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Faculty responsibilities include teaching 12 credits per semester (4 classes) of creative writing, literature, and composition courses.
  • Additional responsibilities may include advising the English honors society (Sigma Tau Delta) and overseeing the publication of the literary journal.
  • Faculty members also serve as academic advisors, work collaboratively on departmental and university committees, participate in the spiritual life of the NCU community, and engage regularly in professional development and scholarly activity.
  • Compensation is based on qualifications, including education and experience.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • M.A, Ph.D. or M.F.A. in English or closely related field, terminal degree preferred
  • Preferred areas of specialization/interest: transnational literature, creative writing, critical race theory
  • Teaching experience and knowledge of effective pedagogy
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
  • Regular scholarly or creative activity
  • Ability to teach using effective instructional methodology and pedagogy, including classroom technology
  • Attendance or membership at an Assemblies of God church or a like-minded church
  • Willingness to sign North Central University’s lifestyle statement

Working conditions and frequency

EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS

Use of a PC, projectors, and telephone, photocopier and facsimile machine approximately 95% of the workday. Use of online course management software such as Moodle.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

  • Exposure to repetitive motion of the fingers, hands, and wrists on a daily basis.
  • Work is performed in a Christ-centered urban environment.
