Position Summary:
Dean of Students (Savannah, GA). The Dean of Students reports to the Associate Vice President for Student Success and provides vision and oversight for the Dean of Students office and other areas that promote student development; oversees University's response to student care and wellbeing, student conduct and community standards, student wellness, and other support services such as TRIO (Armstrong Campus) and Student Support Services (Statesboro Campus). This position will serve as a liaison and advocate for students of concern through the development of student centered services, policies, and resources; participates in development and facilitation of programming and educational initiatives; and identifies systemic gaps in services and barriers to student success and works collaboratively to develop strategies to address issues.

Essential Functions

  • Performs related duties as assigned to support the mission of the University.
  • Supervises, develops, and evaluates performance of Associate Deans, Directors of Student Wellness, TRIO, Student Support Services, and the administrative assistant.
  • Oversees and directs implementation and evaluation of the University's crisis intervention response and Behavioral Assessment Team and all policies, procedures, and prevention efforts pertaining to student care and wellbeing and student crisis intervention.
  • Oversees and directs student conduct and community standards, assuring that all policies, procedures, and prevention efforts are consistent with best practice and are developmental in nature.
  • Assists in creating campus-wide policies, programs, and services that support student success and assures consistent policy implementation across campus locations.
  • Serves as officer for student appeals in reference to rulings of University Judicial Board, Hearing Officer, University Judicial Officer on Armstrong and Liberty Center campuses.
  • Oversees administration, including budget development and resource allocation, of Dean of Students' Office on the Statesboro and Armstrong campus locations.
  • Oversees grant administration for TRIO and SSS, including budget development, and assures goals are met and programs are in compliance with federal program requirements.
  • Assures processes are in place to address student concerns and complaints as they relate to nonacademic issues and that such concerns are addressed in a timely manner.
  • Assures that there is administrative after hours ‘on-call' coverage for student emergencies.
  • Serves as liaison in student non-academic issues with other students, faculty, and staff.
  • Maintains effective partnerships with key departments including, but not limited to, Academic Affairs, the Counseling Center, GSU Police Department, Housing and Residential Education, Student Health Services, Title IX Office, and University General Counsel.
  • Identifies and collaborates to develop appropriate outreach and services for special populations such as students who are homeless, food insecure, or from the foster care system.
  • Supports the mission of the University and the Division through development of departmental strategic plans that include identified learning and operational outcomes and appropriate assessment strategies.
  • Participates in university-wide events, including residence hall openings, Orientation, Welcome Week, Family Weekend, and Commencement and others as appropriate.
  • Provides timely and concise data collection and reports as needed by the division and the university and assures that sensitive student information is reported in Maxient.
  • Provides educational and outreach programming as appropriate.
  • Serves as the committee lead for the Mass Care Team and contributes to strategies for emergency preparedness as related to students.
  • Serves on divisional and university-wide committees and task forces.
  • Provides consultation and serves as a referral resource for faculty, staff, students, and parents.

Minimum Education Required:
Master’s Degree

Could a level of job-related experience higher than the minimum required for the position substitute for the minimum level of education?: No

Minimum Experience Required:
Seven or more years of related work experience in Higher Education; experience supervising professional staff members

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Effective communication (verbal and written), organization and human relations skills; ability to work well in a diverse environment; proficiency with computer and Microsoft Office Applications software including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases; legally authorized to work in the United States; successful completion of background investigation prior to employment

Preferred Education:
Ph.D. or Ed.D. in relevant discipline

Preferred Experience::
Experience with strategic planning and assessment and evaluation of student learning outcomes; experience with a student care team or behavioral intervention team; previous experience at a multi-campus institution; familiarity with Maxient or similar software solutions

Salary Range: Commensurate with experience
