Job Description
The Police Officer in Training, under supervision, receives classroom instruction and on-the-job training in the Prairie View A&M University Police Department.

Responsibilities:

  • Works under general supervision of a police sergeant or lieutenant, patrols property under the jurisdiction of PVAMU in Waller County by University issued vehicle, bicycle or foot patrol.
  • Report all violations, rules, and regulations of PVAMU; provide assistance to the public when possible.
  • Functions as training coordinator to ensure compliance with state TCOLE training mandates. Also, it functions as Victim Assistance Coordinator for the department.
  • Interact with public day-to-day contact. Provide escort service as needed and assist state, county, and city law enforcement authorities upon request. Respond to emergency calls and take appropriate action, provide assistance to other law enforcement, community departments and/or agencies.
  • Prevents crime, suppresses disturbances, issue citations, and testifies in Justice of the Peace Court, County/District Courts, and student judicial hearings. Guards and transports prisoners.
  • Investigates illegal and suspicious activities, persons, establishments, causes and results of accidents. Take detailed reports, perform preliminary investigations, enforces all criminal laws and violations of the Criminal Penal Code of the State of Texas.


Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma.
  • Two years of full-time employment. (NOTE: full-time employment experience does not have to be in law enforcement to be considered as this an entry-level position).

Registrations, Certifications, and Licenses:

  • Must have a State of Texas class 'C' vehicle operator's license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
  • Certified as a Police Officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). Must have a State of Texas class 'C' vehicle operator's license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.


Other Requirements:

  • Must be in excellent physical health and stamina. Work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends. Successful completion of field training program. The applicant must pass an entrance exam to be considered for employment. Applicants must successfully pass a psychological evaluation, physical examination, and complete background investigation to include but not limited to driving history, criminal background, and credit history.
