Job Description:

The Director of Institutional Giving will lead the strategic management of the University's corporate, foundation, and government funding relationships to maximize the philanthropic investments of these constituencies. The position is responsible for ensuring the University reaches its institutional donor annual, and, when applicable, campaign fundraising goals. This includes an annual fundraising goal for unrestricted moneys. This position will be responsible for the development and execution of strategies that will create significantly increased exposure, engagement, and financial support from institutional sources for the University's funding priorities, including scholarships and academic, co-curricular, capital, and community outreach programs. On average, the Institutional Giving department has historically solicited over $10 million per year, and raised over $6 million each year, of which $750,000 is unrestricted funding.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Develops and executes a comprehensive fundraising strategy to increase financial support from foundation, government, and corporate donors/prospects
  2. Serves as an integral member of the leadership team for the Division of Institutional Advancement.
  3. Provides successful leadership to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward institutional gifts. Create and oversee an annual calendar of communications/engagement activities for top institutional donors/prospects
  4. Cultivates relationships with both internal stakeholders (such as administrators, faculty, staff, and program directors) and external constituents (current and prospective donors) for institutional giving
  5. Oversees and liaise with government grants consultant to identify and pursue government funding opportunities. Oversee the University's pre-award sponsored initiatives grant functions
  6. Works with the Vice President for Institutional Advancement to create and execute a strategy to engage current and prospective donor in her portfolio
  7. Coordinates the logistics for donor site visits; staff donor visits; prepare visit research briefing materials and talking points for faculty and leadership
  8. Works closely with the President, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Assistant Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Provost, and other key administrators, staff, and faculty members to identify needs and new funding opportunities
  9. Conducts proactive and responsive donor research and prospecting to identify and qualify new prospects
  10. Develops project budgets for grant proposals and applications
  11. Writes, prepares and submits highly competitive grant requests and other collateral materials for solicitations from institutional sources
  12. Supervises Assistant Director of Institutional Giving. Supervise the work of the Scholarships Coordinator and Donor Relations Manager as it relates to institutional donors. Supervise the work of grant writing consultants, as necessary
  13. Oversees/implements a grant/gift acceptance process that includes donor acknowledgement, funding notification, fund creation, and, if applicable, a communications strategy, covering all corporate, foundation, and government support
  14. Remains knowledgeable about current events, trends, and news that may impact institutional support of higher education and the nonprofit sector; seek opportunities for the intersection of public, private, and nonprofit partnerships that could benefit the College
  15. Works with the Advancement Data Systems and Services department to maintain and administer all institutional donor records in the Raiser's Edge fundraising database
  16. Performs other duties as assigned


Preferred and Required Qualifications



  • Key fundraising concepts and strategies (includes identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship)
  • Knowledge of the grants development process, including prospect research, proposal and budget development, solicitation, and award management
  • Expert grant writing and other development communications skills
  • Knowledge of institutional funding sources, which include foundations, corporations, and government funding agencies
  • Experience with academic programs and learning support systems within higher education and the Catholic community
  • Experience with pre-award sponsored research functions for government grants
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred
  • Ability to use office technology such as computers and software applications, particularly the Microsoft Office suite and various online funder and government grant management systems

  • Outstanding communication, both written and verbal, to interact and develop relationships with a diverse population of prospects that have varied interests and backgrounds
  • Demonstrated success in expert grant writing, proposal development, budget development, and grants administration
  • Superior organizational and project management skills
  • Service orientation with exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Strong record of managing multiple projects and tasks in a deadline driven environment
  • Proven ability to grasp complex subjects, meet deadlines, and build professional relationships
  • Ability to facilitate meetings and lead diverse teams of internal and external stakeholders
  • Successful performance working individually and as part of a team


  • Bachelor's degree in English, communications, or related field from an accredited college or university is required (advanced degree is highly preferred)
  • Additional certificates in fundraising or grant writing are desirable


  • Ten years' experience in development, grant writing, and institutional fundraising strongly preferred, particularly within a higher education setting
  • Expert experience developing internal and external relationships and pursuing funding opportunities from foundations, corporations, and government sources is also required
  • Minimum 5 years' experience with managing complex teams of diverse stakeholders for projects and proposal development is required

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid and current California driver's license is required
