The Associate Provost for Graduate Programs is the chief administrative officer and academic leader of the Graduate School at the University of New Orleans (UNO), and reports directly to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Associate Provost for Graduate Programs articulates the academic vision for graduate education, advocates for its role in the university's mission, understands the increasingly complex role of globalization in the graduate education experience, and provides support and direction to advance the contributions of graduate education to the university’s Strategic Plan. The Associate Provost will influence the advancement of the university as a senior administrative officer who is fiscally responsible for allocating resources to support and shape graduate education.
UNO has a long-standing history of successful graduate programs and offers a wide range of graduate degrees from post graduate certificates to PhDs. UNO is a Carnegie designated R2 institution and the only urban serving public research university in New Orleans.
- Develop and oversee implementation of the strategic plan for graduate education while fostering an intellectual environment characterized by excellence in teaching and learning and discipline-based scholarship.
- Supervise the day-to-day operations and personnel of the Graduate School.
- Oversee the development and administration of operating budgets and staff for assigned functional areas to ensure operation is within fiscal constraints.
- Ensure the successful marketing of graduate programs to maximize recruitment and retention of graduate students.
- Monitor faculty and student compliance with catalog requirements and university regulations.
- Serve as senior administrative officer fiscally responsible for allocating resources to support and shape graduate education.
- Work collaboratively with college deans to coordinate campus-based programs and services that meet the varying needs of a culturally diverse student population and encourage the success of faculty and students.
- Work collaboratively with the other colleges to develop and promote best practices in recruiting and supporting students.
- Provide insight and direction with the development of long range plans, to include determining the school’s needs for expansion or curtailment of programs, as well as expansion or renovation of facilities.
- Develop necessary business plans, financial analyses, and similar documents to aid the University’s decision making process.
- Coordinate graduate program assessment efforts, oversee graduate programs and standards, foster faculty development related to graduate education, and advocate for graduate education to internal and external stakeholders.
- Represent graduate education on various university committees.
- Participate in fundraising activities to support strategic initiatives.
- Oversee development and submission of internal and external reports, assessment and evaluation of programs, and initiate improvements, collaborating with internal and external offices and agencies as appropriate.
- Perform general administrative oversight tasks, including maintaining academic records of all graduate students and certifying completion of degree requirements. Provide oversight for the academic integrity and quality of graduate programs and promote innovative delivery methods to meet the needs of the graduate populations.
Preferred and Required Qualifications
Candidates should submit a cover letter and CV demonstrating how they meet the following required qualifications:
- A minimum of 3 years of high-level administrative experience within a large, complex environment at an institution of higher education, ensuring a broad knowledge and comprehensive understanding of undergraduate and graduate education and graduate student issues, preferably in the public sector
- An earned terminal degree and a record of accomplishment sufficient to qualify for appointment as a full or associate professor with tenure
- A record of progressive and visionary leadership appropriate for graduate education
- Demonstrated commitment to shared governance
- Evidence of a commitment to the recruitment, advancement, and retention of a diverse community of faculty, staff, and students
- Demonstrated effectiveness in planning, administration, personnel and fiscal management
- Demonstrated effectiveness in working with a diverse student body, faculty, staff, and other university constituents
- Demonstrated commitment to high academic standards and a strong understanding of academic issues, especially pertaining to academic integrity
- Ability to work with academic units to create co-curricular components that advance student learning outcomes
- An excellent understanding of governmental programs, agencies, and laws that specifically address university and student issues
- Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
- Collaborative approach to resolving complex problems and forming solutions
- Demonstrated effectiveness in managing and strategically using budgets.
- Successful administrative experience at the chair level or graduate program administration
- Knowledge of current teaching and learning strategies
- Experience in administering and obtaining grants and scholarships
- Evidence of leadership in professional associations
- Graduate level teaching experience
- Experience in fundraising and university advancement.
