Job Description

 

The Department of Biology within the College of Natural and Health Sciences at The University of Tampa invites applications for a full-time 12-month instructional staff position beginning June 1, 2020. This position is renewed annually based on performance.

This instructional staff member would assist in the management, preparation, and maintenance of a selection of upper division biology department lab courses that service the pre-health professional students and the equipment that supports those lab courses. This coordinator would also instruct introductory biology laboratories and/or non-majors biology courses in the department (15 contact hours per year).

Responsibilities

  1. Assisting with ordering, acquiring, tracking, and distributing instructional supplies needed for all upper-level biology department labs (solutions, organisms, supplies, etc.)
  2. Maintaining several key common pieces of molecular equipment, such as PCR machines, imagers, hoods, autoclaves, nanodrops, spectrophotometers, microscopes, pipettes, freezers, etc. Includes overseeing care of instrumentation and monitoring service contracts for assigned laboratory equipment and arranging and/or performing maintenance as needed.
  3. Maintaining, inventorying, and preparing supplies for these selected courses
  4. Assisting with the coordination of hiring, training, and supervision of undergraduate student laboratory mentors for these selected courses
  5. Collecting data on at least an annual basis regarding laboratory classroom needs, for items like fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, broken glass disposal containers, etc., and working with the University Safety Officer to coordinate the disposal of hazardous wastes in departmental laboratories

In addition to these responsibilities, the candidate will be expected to teach 15 contact hours over the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters with teaching responsibilities to begin in August 2020. The primary responsibility will be instructing majors general biology laboratories and/or other non-majors biology courses as needed.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Master's degree in a relevant field is required. Must know basic chemical & biological hygiene and safety requirements. Must have excellent organizational skills and the ability to work smoothly with a diverse group of faculty, staff and students. Must be proficient in handling laboratory equipment and chemicals. Prior teaching, clerical and laboratory experience preferred. A personal commitment to quality undergraduate teaching and service to the Department and University is essential.
