Job Purpose: The South Carolina Honors College at the University of South Carolina invites applications for an Academic Advisor and Events Coordinator. We are seeking outstanding applicants with experience and passion in academic advising and strong administrative and organizational skills to serve as an academic advisor and to coordinate events both social and/or intellectually enriching for Honors students, and to create new community-building events and activities for Honors students. Honors College staff members should possess a wide-ranging intellectual curiosity and a commitment to working with high-achieving students. The Academic Advisor and Events Coordinator will provide academic advising for about 160 students each semester, which will include assessing students’ curricular needs and opportunities, and placing them in appropriate honors classes. As an advisor, this staff member will also guide students toward the richest and most rewarding collegiate experiences, which may include research, study abroad, service learning, and/or internships, culminating in graduation and post-graduation success. Advisors use available technologies to ensure accurate and effective advising, and they function as liaisons with University first-year advisors and with advisors in other academic units. They should employ a working knowledge of college curricula, university policy, and campus resources. This staff member will also serve as coordinator of events for Honors students that are social and/or intellectually enriching. As coordinator of student events, duties include creating, planning, and executing a wide range of community-building and intellectually-enriching activities for students, and working closely with Dean’s Council for planning events for students.
Position Requirements: Master’s degree and 1 year related experience, or bachelor’s degree and 3 years related experience. Must have excellent written and oral communication skills, exercise good judgment, discretion, and be able to work courteously with diverse groups. Experience in student advisement or higher education is preferred. Must have be able to take direction, initiate action, and work as a team member.
