Job Description

Job Purpose:  The South Carolina Honors College at the University of South Carolina invites applications for a Director of Advising.  We are seeking outstanding applicants with experience and passion in academic advising, strong supervisory experience, and administrative and organizational skills to oversee training, coordination and assessment of advising and orientation in the South Carolina Honors College. This position will supervise a group of Honors Advisors and serve as a liaison between the Honors College, academic college advisors, the Office of New Student Orientation and the University Advising Center. The incumbent will be responsible for academic advising of approximately 50 students each semester (or more when advisor positions are vacant), which involves assessing students’ curricular needs and opportunities and placing them in appropriate honors classes. The Honors College Academic Advisors possess a working knowledge of college curricula, university policy, and campus resources. Using this knowledge, Academic Advisors guide students toward a rich collegiate experience that may include research, study abroad, service learning, and/or internships culminating in graduation and post-graduation success, using available technologies to ensure accurate and effective advising.

Duties include: Supervising, training and evaluating professional staff who serve as Honors College advisors. Coordinating summer Freshman Orientation, advising and registration and preparing presentation, materials, and handouts, selecting, training and supervising of Honors Orientation Student Leaders. Using available technologies to ensure accurate and effective advising and assuming advising caseloads of others during position vacancies or in times of expanded enrollment. Managing Honors advisement and serving as liaison to University Advising Center and University Academic Colleges for Honors Advisor access to and training on advising software and tools. Tracking and monitoring honors progression requirements for all SCHC students and serving as liaison to Honors Advisors who identify students deemed at-risk for honors progression. Assessment of metrics on the success/impact of Honors Advising, in addition to regularly sharing data with staff and stakeholders.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Position Requirements:  Master’s degree 4 years related experience, or bachelor's degree and 6 years related experience required. Experience in directly supervising full-time staff positions, previous advising experience, and experience working with high ability students are preferred. Must have excellent written and oral communication skills, exercise good judgment, discretion, and be able to work courteously with diverse groups. Must have be able to take direction, initiate action, and work as a team member.
