  • A Ph.D. or equivalent is required.


  • Candidates must have a record of teaching, scholarship, and service appropriate for the rank of Professor in at least one of these areas: Judaic Studies, Holocaust Studies, Genocide Studies, and Peace Studies.
  • Applicants should demonstrate a record of active scholarship, community engagement, administrative competence, and engaged teaching.

The successful candidate will be hired with tenure at the rank of Professor (Associate Professors will be considered) and will be appointed to an appropriate academic department within the College of Arts and Sciences.

Description of the Department or Unit
The Center for Judaic Holocaust and Peace Studies at Appalachian State University invites applications for the Leon Levine Distinguished Professor of Judaic, Holocaust, and Peace Studies. The Center seeks to strengthen tolerance, understanding, and remembrance by increasing the knowledge of Jewish culture and history, teaching the history and meaning of the Holocaust and other genocides, and using these experiences to explore peaceful avenues for humanity and the prevention of further genocides.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
This is an 11-month contract, tenured faculty position with administrative responsibilities.

The successful candidate will direct the Center, teach one course per semester, and receive reassigned time for research.

The director will sustain constructive relationships with Center stakeholders and assist in fundraising.

The director will also organize and run the Summer Holocaust Symposium.
