The Faculty of Social Work (Fort Garry Campus) of the University of Manitoba invites applications for a full-time probationary at the rank of Assistant Professor. The role includes teaching, research, service, and the supervision of graduate students. The anticipated start date for this position is January 1, 2024, or as soon as possible after that date. Starting salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
The Faculty of Social Work is one of the largest social work programs in Canada, with a proud history of teaching, research and service spanning over 75 years. The Faculty offers the Bachelor, Master, and PhD degrees in social work, including the established innovative MSW-IK program. Our faculty is actively engaged in research and academic publication on a wide variety of topics, and the University of Manitoba is part of the U15 group of research-intensive Canadian universities. Our programs are fully accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education. We are excited to be in a period of renewal of the faculty and building for the future. Candidates must have or be near completion of a Ph.D. in Social Work or in a related field and have a social work degree. If the PhD has not been completed by the appointment date, the person may be appointed to a term position at the rank of Lecturer until satisfactory completion of their PhD. The candidate must be able to work in partnership with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and work collaboratively as a team member. The ideal candidate will have a commitment to and/or demonstrated record of working and researching collaboratively with Indigenous peoples and communities and fostering and enhancing connections with Indigenous organizations. The ideal candidate will be a creative and energetic individual with a demonstrated interest in advancing Indigenist, decolonizing social work, and guiding graduate and undergraduate students in their program.
Knowledge and professional experience directly relevant to this position are: Indigenous ways of being; Indigenous-based social work programming and practices; social policy related to Indigenous peoples; critical theories, particularly those focused on colonialism, anti-colonialism, decolonization, and Indigenism, Indigenization, and Indigenous-focused research. Individuals should know relevant Indigenous protocols. Preference will be given to applicants with knowledge and experience in direct service and healing methods with Indigenous individuals, families, and communities.
