Job Description

Job #: G078
Posted Date: May 29, 2018
Closes On: Open Until Filled
Job Title: Research Associate - Molecular Neurobiology Laboratory, Associate Director, Nicola Allen
Status: Regular Full Time
Benefits Eligible: Yes
Laboratory/Department: Molecular Neurobiology Laboratory
The goal of the lab is to identify how non-neuronal brain cells, specifically astrocytes, regulate the formation, function and stability of neuronal synapses. This is achieved through a combination of in vitro and in vivo approaches, to investigate synapse formation in development, synaptic remodeling during plasticity, and synapse loss in aging and neurodegenerative disease.
Position Description: We are currently seeking a highly motivated and independent postdoctoral research fellow interested in studying the role of astrocytes in regulating synaptic plasticity in vivo. The successful candidate will employ viral-mediated in vivo manipulation of astrocyte gene expression, followed by perturbations to the visual system to determine if the ability to induce plasticity is altered by astrocytes. In depth analysis of candidate factors will require brain slice recordings and immunohistochemical analysis of synaptic proteins.
Education: Ph.D in Neuroscience or related discipline, with an emphasis on in vivo study of neuronal synapses.
Experience: Experience of in vivo manipulation of gene expression in mouse models using viral approaches, and mouse surgery, required. Ex vivo electrophysiology (e.g. whole cell patch clamp in brain slices) required, and familiarity with in vivo recording techniques an advantage. Familiarity with ex vivo approaches to analyze neuronal structure/function e.g. confocal microscopy of synapses, would be an advantage.
Application Instructions: Applicants should send curriculum vitae, statement of research interests and experience, and three references to:
