Position Title:       Director of Campus Life for Inclusion

Department:         C ampus Life         

FLSA Category:    Exempt               

Working Relationships:

Reports to:  Dean of Campus Life

Works Closely with:  All students, faculty and staff, other Student Affairs offices, Athletics, Public Safety.

Directly Supervises: Associate Director of Campus Life indirectly supervises 1 AmeriCorps VISTA

Job Summary:  This is a 12-month, salaried position, reporting to the Dean of Campus Life. The Director will be an experienced, successful strategic leader, manager, and effective communicator with a proven record of bringing diverse communities together. The Director of Campus Life for Inclusion works closely with the university on inclusion and diversity-based programming for students, staff, and faculty as well as advises and trains campus and community leaders on issues of diversity, inclusion, equity, and cultural competency. The successful candidate will be skilled in professionally presenting this information to wide audiences.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated success in working across traditional boundaries with a diverse group of people, including students, faculty, administrators, and alumni, and will have a track record of strong presence on campus with students, student organizations, and at campus events.

This position has been designated as an “Essential” Employee under the Emergency Preparedness Plan in order to ensure that University operations continue uninterrupted during periods of public health or other emergencies, including those that require Millikin University to close or restrict operations.

Campus Life, Student Engagement & Community Engagement

  • Support and mentor the University’s diverse student population by engaging in meaningful and developmental interactions with students.
  • Lead the development and implementation of programs to enhance students’ learning of social justice and cultural competence.
  • Collaborate with units within Student Affairs and the academic colleges to plan and implement initiatives to create a welcoming and inclusive environment that supports student learning and growth.
  • Serve as a liaison between diverse student populations and the immediate and external community.
  • Develop and implement identity monologues that occur during New Student Welcome Week.
  • Serve as an advocate for student engagement and inclusion through frequent attendance at campus and community programs, events, and activities.
  • Produce and facilitate diversity training for all members of the Millikin University community for a wide audience.
  • Collaborate with the Center for International Education to increase global awareness at Millikin University.
  • Collect data, assess goals, and report outcomes of diversity and inclusion programs and services to campus constituencies annually.
  • Serve as a member of the President’s Commission on Inclusive Excellence.
  • Plan Civic Discourse Week and Conversation on Race in conjunction with other offices, departments, and community stakeholders.
  • Planning, development, and implementation of University orientation programs
    • Design and delivery of all aspects of The Millikin University Welcome Week Program, in conjunction with necessary constituents
    • Design and delivery of specialized orientation workshops to include International Student Orientation, Transfer Student Orientation, and PACE FLEX Orientation

Supervision, Administration, & Budget Management

  • Provide leadership, management, fiscal oversight, and staff supervision in all aspects of inclusion and diversity initiatives.
  • Supervision of 1 professional staff member to include evaluation and continuous professional development.

 Student Conduct

  • Serve as a Title IX Hearing Officer
  • Assist students in submitting Title IX complaints

Student Advising and Relationships

  • Oversee, train, and hire Millikin Inclusion Ambassadors through, but not limited to, administering weekly meetings, managing programming budget, overseeing program planning and implementation, facilitating recruitment, selection and onboarding processes and developing trainings and professional development opportunities.
  • Serve as an advocate for students to the campus community.

Student Retention Services

  • Collaborate with other offices such as the Center for Academic and Professional Performance, Admissions, and Athletics on the retention and recruitment of diverse student populations.
  • Create a mentoring program for diverse student populations at Millikin University
  • Propose proactive solutions for improving student success of all underrepresented students.
  • Advise the Dean of Campus Life on the changing demographics of the student population, and recommend strategic imperatives to enhance the retention of diverse student population.
  • Conduct periodic campus climate assessments to illuminate strengths, challenges, and gaps in the development and advancements of an equitable, inclusive climate for diversity.
  • Serve as a Student Development Advisor, within Millikin's retention program, advising a caseload of assigned at-risk students. This includes, but is not limited to: contacting and meeting with advisees, collaborating with academic advisors, faculty, and other partners; using technology platforms to record student interactions, and attending required training and professional development regarding advising students.

 Emergency Response and Crisis Management

  • Serve as a Director on Call for Campus Life

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Minimum Position Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Student Affairs (required)
  • At least 5-7 years of professional experience within Higher Education (post-Master’s)
  • Superior organizational skills and work ethic
  • Energy and enthusiasm for working with a diverse population of students
  • Personal ownership of one’s own professional development.
  • Successful candidates will have prior Student Affairs experience and should also possess an appreciation of data-driven decision making, an inclusive campus community, mentoring, and innovation.
