The department chair will join the University at Buffalo as it embarks on Advancing Top 25: Faculty Hiring—an unprecedented, transformational initiative at UB to hire 200 full-time faculty over the next two years. Roughly half of new faculty will be added in four strategic interdisciplinary impact areas: democracy and society, human health, sustainability, and transformational technology.

The next chair will lead the only standalone biostatistics department among SUNY's 64 institutions. The Department of Biostatistics boasts a portfolio of high-impact disciplinary and interdisciplinary research and a range of undergraduate and graduate programs. Biostatistics has a formal presence in UB's Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences,Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, Clinical and Translational Research Center, Institute for Healthcare Informatics and Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science.

The department is unique among its peers: As a department of both statistics and biostatistics, it features a much broader research and instruction portfolio than a typical biostatistics department. The department offers a bachelor's degree and undergraduate minor in statistics, and biostatistics faculty teach Statistical Methods, an undergraduate service course that enrolls more than 1,000 UB students annually.

The School of Public Health and Health Professions is the first of its kind in the SUNY system and New York State and one of few institutions across the country that includes health-related professions as an integral component of its public health mission. Under the leadership of Dean Jean Wactawski-Wende, the growing school plans to hire 32 faculty over the next three years.

A flagship of the SUNY system, the University at Buffalo is among the premier research universities in the nation and world. Its mission is to leverage its excellence in research, scholarship, creative activity and education to serve global and local communities in ways that change the world for the better.

UB's Top 25 ambition focuses on expanding the university's engagement and impact locally, nationally and globally by promoting and supporting collaborative, cross-disciplinary research that addresses the world's most critical issues and challenges. The university is committed to harnessing its educational, research and engagement energies to combat racism, dismantle structural barriers to equity and make UB a more inclusive place to live, learn and work.
