The internationally-recognized School of Film and Animation (SOFA) offers BFA and MFA degrees in film production with emphasis in either Animation or Live-Action as well as a BS degree in Motion Picture Science. SOFA provides a creative community where students have the opportunity to discover their unique talents and expressive potential, while at the same time developing the skills needed to fulfill any creative or technical role in the film and animation industry. Detailed Job Description

The School of Film and Animation (SOFA) in the College of Art and Design at Rochester Institute of Technology is inviting applications for a non-tenure-track Lecturer position in Animation.

We seek a talented and enthusiastic, practicing cinematic artist, dedicated to the education of filmmakers and animators, to join our top-ranked film and animation program. We are searching for a candidate who is a creative self-starter with a variety of skill sets and experiences, who also has an understanding of animation history. The ideal candidate will have a passion for animation and experimental techniques and be able to bring new ideas and approaches to help expand our curriculum.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teach courses about the aesthetics and techniques of animation and experimental cinema to undergraduate and graduate students. Course topics will include experimental animation, production, film language and theory, animation and film history.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in animation as an artistic practice
  • Provide academic advising to students
  • Assist in curriculum development
  • Participate in committees and provide service to the department and school

Additional experience in any of the following areas is desirable: foundational principles, digital animation techniques, an interest in musical composition for film, cinematic production/theory and fine arts.

The primary responsibility of a lecturer is teaching. A Lecturer is not expected to conduct scholarship, or participate in college or university-level service.

Preferred and Required Qualifications


Required Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree
  • Teaching experience at the college level, or substantial industry experience, or a MFA (non-terminal Masters) degree by the start of contract
  • Significant body of film or animation work (portfolio)
  • Familiarity with the Global History of Animation
  • Proficiency with experimental techniques and ideas
  • Ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the College’s commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and individual differences
