Job Description

 

The School of Social Work at the University of Victoria acknowledges with respect the Songhees, Esquimalt and WSÁNEĆ peoples on whose traditional territory the university stands and whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day.

The University of Victoria School of Social Work, within the Faculty of Human and Social Development, invites applications for two tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor, to commence July 1, 2023, or as negotiated.

We are recruiting TWO positions, one Preferential hire, and one Limited hire:

Preferential hire: For one of the positions, in accordance with the University’s Equity Plan and pursuant to Section 42 of the BC Human Rights Code, preference will be given to members of the following groups: Indigenous peoples and members of visible minorities. Candidates from these groups who wish to qualify for preferential consideration, must self-identify.

Limited hire: For the other position, in accordance with the University’s Equity Plan and pursuant to section 42 of the BC Human Rights Code, the selection will be limited to members of the following designated group: Indigenous peoples. Candidates from this group must self-identify.

Both successful candidates will be expected to teach in the graduate and undergraduate programs (both online and on-campus delivery modalities), supervise graduate students, conduct research and participate in the administrative structure of the school. 

Faculty and Librarians at the University of Victoria are governed by the provisions of the Collective Agreement. Members are represented by the University of Victoria Faculty Association.

 

Preferred and Required Qualifications

The School welcomes applications from qualified candidates who:

  • hold a PhD with at least one Social Work degree;
  • have 5 or more years of social work practice experience post BSW or MSW degree; or have 3 years of social work practice post BSW or MSW degree with relevant lived experience;
  • demonstrate knowledge and experience of decolonial equity and intersectionality in practice, pedagogy and epistemology;
  • have experience and knowledge of teaching undergraduate and graduate programs;
  • bring an emerging program of research and scholarship commensurate with the Assistant Professor level;
  • can articulate how their pedagogical approach supports the School’s vision and mission;
  • have experience with face-to-face and online/distance education
  • are committed to work collaboratively and transparently within the School to meet overall School objectives.

For both positions we seek applicants who demonstrate a commitment to decolonization in their teaching, research and community activism. Areas of research and teaching that are of particular interest to the School, but are not limited to the following, include transnationalism, critical disability studies, poverty, queer theory, environmental justice, Mad studies, health and racial equity and Indigenous pedagogy. Applicants are asked to clearly indicate their area of scholarship and its contribution to social work education.

  • a statement on teaching philosophy and teaching interests with specific reference to how your practice experience informs your pedagogy; and
  • how you have implemented social justice in your practice
  • 2-3 samples of teaching materials you have produced, e.g. podcasts, handouts, etc.
  • 1-2 course syllabi you have designed
  • evaluations of teaching from the latest courses taught
  • appropriate evidence of research (2-5 research publications and/or work in progress)
