Job Description

The School of Theatre at Florida State seeks a full time nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Costume Technology within the MFA in Costume Design program. 

The successful candidate will teach three courses per semester, which may include costume construction, patterning and draping, and costume crafts. Other responsibilities include: overseeing the patterning of costumes by students built for productions and occasional patterning of costumes.

The successful candidate will be someone who can communicate effectively with costume graduate and undergraduate students and collaborate successfully with designers, faculty and staff. This position begins in August 2020.

The applicant must possess advanced expertise in patterning and draping techniques, solid knowledge of historical period shaping and fitting, experience with a wide variety of materials, and a proven record of professional costume construction methods. Experience in millinery construction, fabric modification, and costume crafts is preferred. Some knowledge of wig styling and maintenance is an added bonus.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Qualifications: MFA degree in costume technology or in costume design with extensive emphasis in technology, and at least three years’ experience teaching at college or university level and professional theatre experience. The ability to mentor MFA costume design students regarding professional level training in costuming is essential.
