BASIC FUNCTION
The Center for Writing and Public Discourse (CWPD) Director has a primary responsibility for managing the daily operations of the Center, including best practices for tutoring and writing and communication pedagogy as well as supporting CMC’s faculty and, more broadly, institutional efforts to support and promote a robust culture of writing and public discourse across the curriculum.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Hires, trains, and assesses student tutors and professional staff. Manages the CWPD budgets to ensure continuity of services throughout the academic year, or as needed. Coordinates with academic departments and campus entities to determine new writing and communication initiatives or programs as needed to support current and new college initiatives. Oversees CMC’s Appel Fellowship. Collaborates with faculty and campus entities, whether individually or by committee, on writing and public discourse efforts. Initiates and supports ongoing faculty development related to writing and communication pedagogy. Coordinates Writing Across Curriculum efforts with appropriate campus entities. Serves as a member of the Dean of the Faculty’s staff and as an ex officio voting-member of the Committee for Writing.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Work to develop and promote a culture of writing and public discourse at CMC. Hires, trains, schedules and supervises student writing tutors, head consultants, and CWPD professional staff. Develop innovative writing and communication programming based on reflective assessment of the CWPD and its services. Stay up-to-date with writing center studies best practices, technologies, and relevant memberships. Tracks all CWPD data and clients. Manages the CWPD budget. Coordinates with academic departments and other programs as needed on writing and communication programming. Initiate and support ongoing faculty development programming related to writing and communication pedagogy. Facilitate writing and public discourse Across the Curriculum efforts on campus. Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
EDUCATION: PhD in English, literature, rhetoric, or related field or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
EXPERIENCE: 5 years tutoring writing and public discourse, teaching writing, oral communication or leading a writing center at a college or university level.
HOURS: Full-time, 40 hours per week with occasional nights and weekends.
CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS: This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt level, benefits-eligible position.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Supervises and hires the CWPD tutors, head tutors, and professional staff.
REPORTS TO: Associate Dean of the Faculty for Curriculum and Vice President for Academic Affairs /Dean of the Faculty.
OTHER: The successful candidate will be required to undergo a full consumer background check. Employment is contingent on the satisfactory results of the aforementioned, in addition to compliance with requirements cited in this job description.
