The Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Alabama (http://me.eng.ua.edu) invites qualified candidates for two non-tenured track, renewable contract positions as Research Assistant Professor.
Both positions require Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field, and background and experience in combustion with focus on internal combustion engines (ICEs): (1) the first position requires experimental background in combustion experiments at high-pressures including skills to perform engine dynamometer tests.
Knowledge of thermal-fluid instrumentation, emissions measurements, data acquisition systems, engine control units, and ability to program hardware and analyze experimental data is necessary.
Familiarity with optical diagnostics techniques for flow and species measurements is desirable, and (2) the second position requires computational experience and background to perform high-performance, multi-dimensional CFD analysis of ICEs. An ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of commercial codes such as CONVERGE CFD and ANSYS FLUENT, and/or open-source code OPEN FOAM.
The candidate is expected to be well-versed in formulating turbulence and chemical kinetics models and implementing them in CFD codes to investigate auto-ignition, combustion, and emissions behavior of fossil and alternative fuels.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or a closely related field by the date of appointment. Industrial and/or post-doctoral experience is desirable.
Applicants must be US citizen or permanent residents of the US, and must qualify as a US person.
Applicants must demonstrate the potential to strengthen the research program in the engine/combustion area, collaborate effectively with other faculty in the Engines and Combustion Laboratory (ECL), work with graduate and undergraduate students in various combustion/engine related research projects, and the ability to independently secure external research funding from various federal agencies and other sources.
