Special Information

The Department of Health Sciences, within the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) at Northern Arizona University, invites applicants for a full-time (9-month) non-tenure-track faculty position at the Lecturer (Masters degree required) or Assistant Teaching Professor (Doctoral degree required) level in our Nutrition and Foods Program. The position will also include the title, roles and responsibilities of the Masters in Public Health Nutrition Program Coordinator. The position begins August 2023. The successful applicant will have the expertise to teach both residential and online courses on three or more of the following topics: Nutrition Communications, Nutrition Research, Culinary Arts, Food Science, Medical Nutrition Therapy, Public Health/Community Nutrition.

Job Description

This is a full-time, non-tenure eligible faculty position, requiring a balance of teaching (80%) and service (20%). Teaching load for this position is typically 12 credits (4 courses) per semester. In addition to quality teaching, the successful candidate will be expected to actively participate in Department, College/University, and Community/Professional service related to the roles and responsibilities as Coordinator of the Masters in Public Health Nutrition Program. These roles and responsibilities include: student advising and mentorship; oversight of ACEND accreditation policies, procedures, and processes; student placement in supervised experiential learning rotations; program recruitment and review; community collaboration and partnerships. Both teaching and service loads are adjusted accordingly to support coordinator duties. Research and other forms of scholarship activity are not an expectation for this position, and reassigned time will not be allocated for research activities.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Lecturer Rank:

  • Masters degree in Nutrition and Foods/Dietetics, Culinary Arts, Food Science Clinical Nutrition, or a related field.
  • University or community college teaching experience as the primary instructor of record.
  • Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) Credential.
  • Five or more years of professional experience as an RDN.

Assistant Teaching Professor Rank:

  • Earned doctoral degree in Nutrition and Foods/Dietetics, Culinary Arts, Food Science, Clinical Nutrition, or a related field (ABD may be considered if degree completion will happen within 6 months. In such a case initial appointment would be as an instructor with lower salary until the terminal degree is conferred).
  • University or community college teaching experience as the primary instructor of record.
  • Experience with curriculum design and assessment.
  • Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) Credential.
  • Three or more years of professional experience as an RDN.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two or more years full-time teaching in a university setting (both residential and online) as the primary instructor of record.
  • Experience as a director or coordinator of an academic, internship, and/or supervised experiential learning program.
  • Experience with a Learning Management System, such as Canvas or Blackboard, as well as other online learning platforms.
  • Evidence of teaching at multiple levels of the curriculum (lower 100/200 level classes, upper 300/400 level classes, and/or graduate-level classes).
  • Evidence of working and interacting with people from a wide variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.

The Department of Health Sciences serves approximately 1,800 undergraduate and graduate students within the College of Health and Human Services. The department is a true multidisciplinary unit, providing six different undergraduate degree programs in five unique disciplines (Public Health, Nutrition and Foods, Allied Health, Fitness Wellness, and Physical Education Teacher Education), along with the Master of Public Health degree, and collaboration in an Interdisciplinary Health PhD degree between the College of Health and Human Services and the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The Health Sciences Department offers courses that encompass numerous aspects of health and wellness and provides health and fitness courses for students in other degree programs across the university. Additionally, the department offers curricula in traditional residential and online formats.

Flagstaff has a population of about 70,000, rich in cultural diversity. Located at the base of the majestic San Francisco Peaks, Flagstaff is 140 miles north of Phoenix at the intersection of Interstate 17 and Interstate 40.

With its elevation of 7,000 feet and four-season climate, Flagstaff is ideal for year-round outdoor activities. Nearby attractions include the Grand Canyon, Lowell Observatory, Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, Monument Valley, Sunset Crater, Meteor Crater, and Arizona Snowbowl.

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of employment. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following 90 days of employment.
