The Libraries at Binghamton University are expanding! With a new strategic plan in place, we have identified new needs and opportunities for the Library to support and further our mission of providing our University community with high-quality collections, services and spaces for research and academic achievement.

 

Binghamton University Libraries Cataloging Services supports the Binghamton University community by providing bibliographic access and control through both metadata and traditional cataloging. The Assistant Head of Cataloging serves as a member of the team responsible for providing original, adjusted and copy cataloging for a wide range of print and non-print materials in various formats, as well as metadata for our digital repositories. Binghamton University is a member of the SUNY Consortium and participates in a shared cataloging environment.

A strong commitment to service and user access to information is essential. The position reports to the Director of Technical Services with a second-line supervisor being the Dean of Libraries. Librarians at Binghamton University are members of the tenure track faculty and are expected to contribute significantly to the profession.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Working with the Director of Technical Services, participates in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of cataloging operations and workflows to expedite the efficient processing of library materials. Establishes priorities and creates policies and procedures. Writes and maintains documentation relevant to cataloging, for both MARC and Non-MARC metadata.
  • Performs original and complex cataloging in the MARC21 format for materials in a variety of languages and formats, conforming to standards such as RDA, PCC (CONSER/BIBCO), LC Classification, and LCSH, as well as SUNY Consortium and local cataloging policies. Performs associated authority control work following PCC/NACO standards.
  • Serves as first level administrative supervisor for Cataloging staff. Trains and evaluates the work of original catalogers, adjusted catalogers and staff handling copy cataloging. Answers questions concerning cataloging, both bibliographic and authority based, and resolves complex cataloging problems including those associated with books, serials and non-print formats.
  • Oversees data remediation, and evaluates catalog issues to oversee projects as needed.
  • Participates in the planning, implementation and support for digital projects. Collaborates with staff and department heads across the Libraries to implement cross-functional initiatives.
  • Participates in a work culture that promotes diversity and anti-racism and actively works to eliminate or mitigate the effects of systemic racism and bias.
  • Pursues scholarly growth through participation in professional library organizations, research, presentations, and publication.
  • Maintains a current knowledge of national and international developments and trends in cataloging, classification and subject analysis, metadata, bibliographic and authority control, and automation of cataloging functions.
  • Participates in library and University committees.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  • Master's degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Experience in cataloging and metadata services.
  • Experience with maintenance of bibliographic records, including batch importing and editing.
  • Experience with cataloging practices including knowledge of RDA, Library of Congress subject heading practice, and MARC21.
  • Experience with at least one non-MARC metadata schema.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity and anti-racism and working to advance a workplace culture that strives to eliminate or mitigate the effects of systemic racism and bias.
  • Ability to lift and carry loads of books (10-20 lbs.), push heavy book trucks, bend and stretch to reach high and low shelves, and be able to spend periods of time at a computer.
  • Supervisory and training experience.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with the ExLibris Alma library services platform.
  • Proficiency in a language other than English.
