Job Description

This position is that of the University's senior development officer. The Vice President for Development provides strategic and operational leadership for the Office of Development which includes planned giving, major gifts, the annual fund, comprehensive and capital campaigns and corporate and foundation relations. Additionally, this individual solicits major gifts on behalf of the University and serves as the lead strategist for all gift solicitation throughout the university. In addition to overseeing and coordinating among all fund-raising staff, the VP for Development works closely with the President and senior administration on fundraising priorities and is the chief spokesperson for all matters related to the University's fundraising efforts.


  • Advise and support the President as chief fundraiser. Similarly, advise vice presidents, deans and key volunteers in activities that support the philanthropic needs of the University.
  • Design and implement a comprehensive institutional development program, including: establishing and implementing annual goals, objectives, and tasks; collaborating with the President, Deans, Department Heads, Vice Presidents and student groups to identify funding sources and seek funding for priority projects; set clearly defined and measurable goals and report regularly on progress toward achieving the goals.
  • Provide strategic and operational leadership in advancing the mission of the University.
  • Support strategic priorities through the attainment of development goals and metrics; in addition to raising unrestricted funds, attract endowment funds to support student scholarships, faculty research and additional university needs.
  • Ensure compliance with University policies and procedures, as well as State and federal regulations and accreditation requirements.
  • Establish and maintain leadership to the University's diverse fund-raising efforts in order to prevent duplication of solicitation. Benchmark PVAMU development performance against peer institutions and advance the university's results to the top tier among its peers.
  • Develop and execute creative strategies to ensure successful campaigns.
  • Work closely with alumni relations to increase alumni giving.
  • Maintain active engagement in the field of philanthropy and development to keep the President, executive committees, and deans informed of current trends, issues, problems and activities impacting higher education fundraising.
  • Lead staff and volunteers to institutionalize philanthropy and fund development within the organization. Work closely with the PVAM Foundation leadership to promote accountability and ensure the highest level of compliance standards and effective stewardship of funds.
  • Perform all other duties necessary to accomplish the educational, administrative and financial objectives of the University as assigned by the President.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Post-graduate study and/or certification
  • Seven (7) years of senior level fundraising experience in non-profit institutions or university advancement with a successful record of accomplishment in direct solicitation, prospect management, annual giving, major and planned giving management and leading capital campaigns.
  • Outstanding and proven oral and written communication skills.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated understanding of a comprehensive advancement program.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to lead and manage annual giving programs, planned giving programs, corporate and foundation outreach programs and major gift fundraising. Must have a proven track record of successfully closing on major gifts.
  • Exceptional communication skills and an ability to work collaboratively with other leaders of the university to establish an inclusive vision and plan.
  • Skills and ability to hire, train, supervise and inspire professional advancement staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate data-driven decision making into planning and execution of programs and activities.
