Visiting Assistant Professor - Secondary Education, Social Studies. 

Brief Summary of Work for this Position:

The Department of Instructional Technology, Foundations, and Secondary Education (ITFSE) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington is seeking a Visiting Assistant Professor in Secondary Education – Social Studies, starting January 2023. This is a one-year, fixed-term appointment, renewable year-to-year, up to three years.

The department has a diverse group of faculty from different racial, ethnic, religious, and philosophical backgrounds. Our faculty members are active researchers and dedicated teachers with an incredible commitment to providing high quality, rigorous academic programs that have a positive impact on the community. Upon initial appointment, the successful candidate’s teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate and graduate courses (9-12) in Social Studies Education and other areas related to Secondary Education Social Studies. Additional responsibilities may include collaborating with colleagues to maintain and grow our secondary licensure programs; collaborating with campus, community, and state education partners through community-engaged scholarship and professional development; advising students in the secondary program; and participating in program development and accreditation processes.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit 

The Department of Instructional Technology, Foundations, and Secondary Education prepares educators/professionals for leadership positions in instructional technology and secondary education. Our commitment is to the development of highly competent professionals to serve in educational leadership roles.

The Secondary Education Program prepares students to teach high school (9th-12th grade) in a variety of education settings, including traditional high schools, and small “alternative” high schools in urban, suburban, and rural environments. The program has both a Secondary Undergraduate and Secondary MAT program options for students seeking high school teacher licensure in the core subjects of English, mathematics, science, and social studies. The Secondary Education program has several distinctive features:

Programs leading to teacher licensure are offered in the fields of biology, chemistry, geology, English, anthropology, history, sociology, political science, and mathematics

College/School Information

The Watson College of Education (WCE) ( is a rapidly growing college with over 65 tenure-track faculty members working in undergraduate and master’s programs in the Department of Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle, Literacy and Special Education and the Department of Instructional Technology, Foundations and Secondary Education, and master’s and doctoral programs in the Department of Educational Leadership. Preferred and Required Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Applicants for this position must hold a terminal degree (i.e., Ph.D., Ed.D.) in social studies education, or a closely related field with at least 18 hours of graduate coursework closely related to social studies, secondary education, curriculum & instruction, or cultural foundations of education, at the time of employment from an accredited (U.S.) or certified (international) postsecondary institution. ABD candidates may be considered depending on the expected completion date.
  • Experience teaching Social Studies Methods or Methods equivalent at university level
  • Minimum of 3-years teaching experience at the secondary level
  • Demonstrated evidence of ways research, teaching, and service contribute to building and sustaining equitable, diverse, and inclusive communities.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Research and teaching experiences centered in questions of diversity, equity, and access issues in the areas including, but not limited to social studies, secondary education, social foundations of education, and curriculum and instruction. Preference will be given to candidates whose scholarship and teaching are grounded in sociocultural frameworks explicitly addressing issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Experience teaching in /working with underserved communities and diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated potential for building school and community partnerships.
  • Evidence of successful college-level teaching experience in face-to-face, online, and hybrid learning environments.
  • If candidate is ABD, it is preferred that the terminal degree be in-hand by begin date of appointment.
