CHC Regional Physician- Director of Mental Health


Position Description

Provides advanced professional services related to psychiatric diagnosis and treatment of inmate patients. Coordinates the delivery of clinical psychiatric and behavioral health care within an administrative region of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Correctional Health System ensuring that the appropriate health care is accessible and provided in a timely fashion. Renders psychiatric judgment regarding care provided to inmates assigned to West Texas Facilities according to TTUHSC Psychiatric Department Procedures, CMHC Policies and Procedures, and national accrediting body standards. Work under the administrative direction of the Executive Medical Director with wide latitude to exercise initiative and independent judgment.

Major/Essential Functions

  • Aligns with Values Based Culture 
  •  Directs, coordinates and insures the provision or the full range of psychiatric care for assigned region.
  • Acts as the final psychiatric authority in matters of reginal discussions. 
  •  Assures the region's compliance with external auditing standards, executive directives, administrative directives, access to care and other applicable policies and procedures.
  • Reviews the functioning of each regional unit's medical operation.
  • Acts as TTUHSC psychiatric representative at all Regional and Statewide Committee meetings as directed. Chairs such meetings as appointed.
  • Responsible for the provision of the regional provider Montford On-Call Schedule. Acts as secondary back-up in regional call complex.
  •  Performs duties of a correctional psychiatrist.
  • Administrative oversight and monitoring of assigned employees.
  • Teams with HR and other leaders to make wise personnel decisions.
  • Delegates responsibilities and specific duties to appropriate personnel and assures that all duties delegated are performed.
  • 360º Effective communication with all team members.
  • Performs a variety of duties not listed to be determined and assigned by the employee's physician supervisor to include coverage of proximate units as needed.
  • Persists in leading change and system improvement.
  • Monitors operations of mental health clinics by reviewing and interpreting monthly reports, reviewing charts and inspecting clinics.

Required Qualifications

+License/Certifications:+ * Current Drug Enforcement Agency and Texas Department of Public Safety controlled substances registration certificates. * Current license to practice medicine by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners.

Preferred Qualifications

Position Specific Qualifications:
Bachelors Degree. Education/Experience: Medical Degree (M.D. or D.O.) from an Accredited School of Medicine. Minimum of seven years clinical medical and supervisory experience within a large health care organization in the field of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health. Current license to practice medicine by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners. Board Certification in Psychiatry. Current Drug Enforcement Agency registration certificate.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Working knowledge of managed care principles in a health facility to include personnel management, policy and procedure development and implementation. Demonstrated leadership and maturity commensurate to interfacing with multiple disciplines related to intra/inter-institutional matters. Ability to organize complex work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgement based on an understanding of organizational policies and objectives. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive clinical issues, inquiries or complaints. Excellent verbal and communication skills, sound clinical judgement, flexibility, multitask oriented, and conducts self in a professional manner.
