Senior Correctional Psychologist


Position Description

Delivers psychological services in a prison unit. Work involves providing care to psychiatric patients including assessment of patients' psychological needs, formation of treatment plans and conducting therapy with groups or individuals. Is jointly responsible with the psychiatrist for providing medical management and supervision, and for planning and directing all psychiatric clinic services on that unit. Provides clinical supervision to all levels of Mental Health Clinicians and other psychiatric services staff.

Major/Essential Functions

• Meets regularly with program managers and other relevant persons to establish and monitor the goals and activities necessary to ensure smooth and efficient clinical operation of the psychological services for the region.
• Collaborates with other Regional Management Staff in policy development, operational decision making, pursuit of standards compliance and regional goal attainment.
• Provides direct supervision of all psychological services including Crisis Management referral processing and direct clinical consultation.
• Ensure that psychology staff follow appropriate Total Quality Management, ACA, TDCJ, and TTUHSC Policies and Procedures.
• Ensures monitoring and treatment of offender/patients who pose a potentially lethal risk to self.
• Serves in a professional capacity as a TTUHSC CMHC representative to a variety of state-wide management and policy-development committees and workgroups.
• Coordinates team-directed program / outcome evaluation projects, including reporting of results to management staff.
• Participates in the Quality of Care review and recommendation process following any offender suicide in the TTUHSC region.
• Participates in the education, training and academic development of staff and students.
• Supervises accurate Web Leave reporting for assigned staff as well as implementation of progressive discipline when indicated.

Required Qualifications

+Education:+ * Doctoral degree in psychology from an approved accredited college, university or school of professional psychology. * Licensed by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists. * 2 years' experience as a practicing psychologist.

Preferred Qualifications

• Holds a Ph.D. in Psychology and licensed as a psychologist in the state of Texas. Has experience working with people who are mentally ill. Has experience working in a correctional setting. Is able to effectively communicate in writing and verbally. Is capable of working on several tasks simultaneously and does so according to designated time frames and level of importance.
• Employee is able to interact with people of all cultures, social economic backgrounds and educational levels. Understands and recognizes psychological, emotional and physical boundaries and practices in accordance with that knowledge and understanding. Is able to work in accordance with the standards of TTUHSC, CMHC, TDCJ, and TSBEP. Verbal and written communication is effective in the completion of clinical and administrative job tasks. Demonstrates an interest and ability to build upon existing skills and knowledge to enhance their professional growth and development, i.e. by accepting and using constructive criticism, seeking out training opportunities, etc.
