Basic Function:
Under the direction of the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Success, the Associate Vice President for Marketing & Communications is responsible for increasing institutional brand awareness, developing integrated marketing strategies, and guiding the university's approach to communications and public relations efforts to ensure Cal Lutheran continues to advance its mission.The Associate Vice President will collaborate with campus partners in achieving enrollment, philanthropic, and institutional goals while providing university-wide leadership in developing and implementing communication plans that elevate Cal Lutheran's brand awareness and deepen the understanding of the university's mission and its programs, both internally and externally. The AVP also directs the Marketing & Communications department with a team of professionals in design, video, digital, writing/editing, media relations, branding and communications.

Representative Duties:
  • Provide vision and leadership for the university’s integrated marketing and communication operations. E
  • Develop a comprehensive and proactive university-wide marketing, communication and branding strategy that supports the strategic goals, plans and aspirations of the university. E
  • Serve as communication counsel to the President and other members of university leadership. E
  • Partner with university leadership to generate innovative ideas and solutions that engage community members and donors. E
  • Lead crisis and issues management planning and rapid response messaging to deal with critical events as they arise; provide strategic counsel on reputation and issues management to university leadership. E
  • Lead media relations outreach and oversee the university’s media relations strategy.
  • Provide guidance for the coordination of high-level internal communication policies and standards. E
  • Provide leadership to and management of the Marketing & Communications department through goal setting, assessment of team structure and responsibilities, evaluation of direct reports, and professional development. E
  • Oversee institutional brand development and how it supports enrollment, fundraising, athletics and other key offices and programs. E
  • Work toward a successful achievement of the university’s strategic plan by fulfilling the responsibilities of the Marketing and Communication team. E
  • Facilitate market research that supports enrollment, advancement and brand awareness goals. E
  • Ensure Cal Lutheran’s brand identity is integrated across campus-wide marketing messages and programs. E
  • Provide vision for the usage and production of general university publications, video, social media and digital communication for various departments and programs. E
  • Facilitate opportunities for strategic alliances between Cal Lutheran and corporate, business and educational entities. E
  • Cultivate strong working relationships with staff, faculty and students across the university. E
  • Develop themes, messages, and brand resources for university departments that can be used to ensure brand cohesion when promoting university priorities to external audiences such as prospective students and their families, community, church, alumni, and leaders in the corporate, nonprofit and education fields. E
  • Analyze and review budgetary data and authorize expenditures in accordance with established limitations. E
  • Manage the overall Marketing & Communications budget. E

  • Manage and reconcile expenditures

Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination equivalent to: a Master’s degree in communications/marketing/public relations or related field with a minimum of eight years of professional experience in marketing and communications with increasing responsibility. Successful track record of developing and implementing multi-faceted marketing and communication strategies in a complex environment.
