Job Description

McMurry University invites applications for a full-time Director of Bands. The primary responsibilities of the position include directing the McMurry Wind Ensemble and McMurry Marching Band and recruiting for the instrumental side of the Department of Music. Additional duties will be assigned based on the strengths of the selected candidate and may include teaching academic courses in the department with the possibility of teaching applied instrumental lessons of the candidate's primary instrument.

This is a full-time, one-year Visiting Assistant Professor position beginning August 2022 in the Department of Music; rank of Assistant Professor or Instructor, depending upon qualifications.

Essential Duties Summary

The primary responsibilities of the position include directing the McMurry Wind Ensemble and McMurry Marching Band and recruiting for the instrumental side of the Department of Music. Additional duties based upon the strengths of the selected candidate may include teaching music education courses (i.e. Introduction to Music Education and Marching Band Techniques), music theory courses (i.e. Forms & Styles and Orchestration & Arranging), music history courses (i.e. Music Appreciation), and teaching applied instrumental lessons of the candidate's primary instrument. Exact duties and course load will be determined after a candidate is selected.

The successful applicant will actively recruit and retain talented students, participate in student and professional activities supported by the department.

Required Qualifications

A successful applicant must have collegiate and/or secondary teaching experience, and a Master's degree in Music or Music Education.

Successful applicants must be committed to the concept of an undergraduate liberal arts education and to the University's Mission and Core Values (see links above). In addition, the successful applicant will continue to develop a productive Wind Ensemble and Marching Band and have proven success with student recruitment in an academic setting.

Earned Doctorate in Music or ABD.
