Position Summary

The New Mexico State University Department of Theatre Arts invites applications for a visiting professor, Technical Director. Appointment begins August 2022.

Responsibilities include teaching Stagecraft and Stagecraft lab, Crew classes that work on productions, and other areas of specialty, maintaining shop areas and executing construction with lab students and work-study students; facilitating the technical elements of each production;

The ideal colleague will have a broad knowledge of technical theatre and design; knowledge of industry safety regulations and best practices; proficient in set construction with a variety of materials; preferred skill as a scenic painter; proficiency in industry-specific software as needed; strong leadership, work ethic, and organizational skills; ability to track budgets effectively/efficiently; excellent communication and creative problem-solving; and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and climb stairs and ladders.

Perform and delegate duties related to the construction, installation, and strike of all scenic elements.

Communicate any limitations of time, personnel, and budget to the appropriate production personnel.

Responsible with theatre manager for all lighting, projection, and rigging for each production.

Supervise student employees.

Responsible for sourcing materials from vendors and keeping detailed records.

Responsible for the departmental scene shop, maintaining equipment, keeping accurate inventory of shop tools and properties.

Work closely with University Risk Management to create and maintain safe workplaces.

Ensure scenic properties and rehearsal furniture are available for rehearsals in a timely manner and overseeing the smooth process of striking and storing scenery at the end of a production run.

Regularly communicate, collaborate and work closely with department head, directors, stage managers, sound designers, house managers and costume designers for each production.

Required Qualifications

Terminal degree in theatre or equivalent experience.

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. safely; operate all shop machinery; climb stairs and ladders
