Job Description
A successful candidate will develop and lead a nationally recognized research and extension program focused on design and test
lighting, nutrient delivery, and filtration systems to ensure optimal plant health, yield and quality, evaluation of sensing applications to
improve understanding of plant response to key environmental indicators, and monitoring of plant growth and nutrition to establish
crop-specific nutrient and environmental thresholds based on growth stage that are of interest to VSU and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Responsible for preparing and submitting scientific articles for publication in peer-reviewed journals and other scientific publications;
independently prepares and submits proposals for external funding; will foster strong and meaningful collaborations with other faculty in
the plant science area at the Agricultural Research Station. Present research findings at professional society conferences and other
meetings as appropriate; contribute to the development and implementation of appropriate undergraduate and graduate programs including
teaching and participating in departmental, college and University service and outreach activities.
Holding a 25%
Extension appointment, an ideal candidate will provide professional expertise on Indoor Food Production systems and support the efforts of
Virginia Cooperative Extension specialists and statewide agents to develop and deliver innovative educational programming to a diverse
audiences including small, local, minority, and disadvantaged farmers throughout the Commonwealth. This position is expected to serve as the
state-wide disciplinary expert working with an interdisciplinary team to provide solutions to problems in indoor food production systems.

- Ph.D. in Plant Physiology, Horticulture, Agronomy, Agricultural Engineering or closely related discipline with demonstrated ability to design and conduct publishable research in plant sciences.
- Experience providing quantifiable expertise in designing, implementing, and evaluating Indoor Food Production systems.
- Evidence of effective teaching ability and skills in university and/or community-based programs.
- Demonstrated ability to adapt programmatic needs to various platform delivery software systems (Cisco WebEx, Zoom, etc.).
- Experience in marketing and promotional advertising materials related to respective area.
- Experience in developing publications, including journal articles, and technical reports.
- Demonstrated ability to create and facilitate informative research programs for various audiences.
- Possess strong written and oral communication skills to include computer literacy, interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently.
- Ability to interact and communicate written/orally between federal, state, university, and county clientele.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member.
- Experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion of underserved audiences.
- Experience identifying and applying assessment tools and/or methods to aid in determining successful learning outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to secure extramural funding is strongly desired.
- Prior experience with the Land-Grant University system.
- Experience with implementing applied research activities related to respective program area/interest.
- Knowledge and understanding of 1890 Land-grant University Agricultural Research and Cooperative Extension organizations, operation, philosophy, and objectives is preferred.
