The candidate will teach courses in voice-speech or movement, and acting, and will possess an interest in developing innovative teaching and production experiences. The successful candidate must be able to work with students from a wide range of social, cultural, and class backgrounds.  We are particularly interested in applicants experienced with inclusive, anti-racist, decolonized casting and production and/or culturally responsive theatre practice addressing race, class, gender, sexuality, neurodiversity, ability, and/or religion.

Applicants should have or be on their way to completing (prior to start of contract), a terminal degree in theatre (M.F.A. or Ph.D.) or closely related field, and university-level teaching experience or its equivalent.  In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will contribute to UMBC Theatre productions in their area of expertise.

Additional requirements include excellent organizational, communication, and collaboration skills; interest in curriculum development and committee service; and demonstrated commitment to inclusive excellence through teaching, research, or professional practice. Minimum starting salary is $70K, commensurate with qualifications and experience, and the position includes a full university benefits package.

UMBC Theatre fosters artistically innovative and socially engaged undergraduates in a leading liberal arts program housed in a state-of-the-art facility.  Using the latest technologies and practices, we experiment with theatrical forms, create provocative new work, and give voice where it is most needed.  Our faculty and students are actively engaged in making new plays in new ways; we have a proven track record of innovative research and teaching. Our undergraduate degree programs emphasize creative collaboration, individual agency and experimentation, critical engagement and embodied practice as research.   The Department serves approximately 125 majors & minors; degree programs include Acting BFA, and Theatre BA (Design & Production or Theatre Studies track).

UMBC is a Carnegie Research I University institution: tenure-track faculty are expected to develop research/creative work that leads to a national reputation in their field, and institutional support and mentorship is provided. UMBC is located near theaters in Baltimore and Washington, D.C., where many faculty contribute to professional productions.

Responsibilities:

This full-time, nine-month appointment requires a combination of research/creative work, teaching, and service. The successful candidate will teach five courses per year and contribute to UMBC Theatre productions in their area of expertise.  Production responsibilities are considered part of the curricular load.  This candidate typically serves on three departmental committees, and recruits and advises students as assigned.

Required qualifications:

  • Applicants should have a terminal degree in theatre (M.F.A. or Ph.D.) or a related field prior to the start of contract.
  • Experience teaching at the college or university level or similar classroom experience.
  • Demonstrated record of teaching experience in movement or vocal training for the stage, and methods of acting.
  • Demonstrated record of creative practice in any area of theatre performance, or coaching.
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive excellence through teaching, research, or professional practice.
  • Potential for leadership in curriculum development and academic leadership.

Preferred additional qualifications:

Additional expertise in another area of theatre/drama such as:  Black acting methods, devising, directing, playwriting, choreography, site-specific performance, new play development, digital performance, or the dramatic literature/history of any area of American ethnic or multicultural theater.

We are looking for a candidate who has practical experience in anti-racist or decolonizing theatre-making practices and making work that specifically intersects with race and identity.

Full consideration will be given to those applicants who submit all materials to Interfolio by November 15, 2022.  A complete submission will consist of:

1.         A cover letter that briefly summarizes your qualifications and interest in the position.   Please also describe your approach to teaching and provide descriptions of any significant project(s). Examples of equitable and accessible practices or approaches are particularly welcome.

2.         Please include links to websites and/or other media that captures your work.

3.         Current resume and/or Curriculum Vitae

4.         Statement of Contributions to Inclusive Excellence that addresses your understanding of the barriers facing traditionally underrepresented groups and your past and/or future contributions to equity and inclusion through teaching, professional work, or public service.

5.         Applicants must provide the names and contact information for three (3) references.

(Though we do not require letters of reference at the first stage of the application process, applicants are advised to speak to potential recommenders. The Search Committee will request confidential reference letters from those applicants who are asked to interview.)
