Situated in the northeast quadrant of the city of 200,000, the hillside campus is just four miles away from downtown Huntsville. AAMU offers its 6,100-student population a wide range of course offerings under the College of Agriculture, Life and Natural Sciences; College of Business and Public Affairs; College of Education, Humanities and Behavioral Sciences and College of Engineering, Technology and Physical Science. The School of Graduate Studies serves about 1,400 and offers doctoral degree programs in Applied Physics, Food Science, Plant/Soil Science and Reading/Literacy.  

Job Description:


The position of Chairperson of English and Foreign Languages is at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The candidate reports to the Dean of the College of Education, Humanities, and Behavioral Sciences and is responsible for the supervision of the faculty and leading innovations including teaching and learning, and faculty development. The chair is expected to engage faculty in shared governance. The department is home for the English degree program and courses are provided for the general education curriculum in literature, composition, speech, and foreign languages (French and Spanish). Prior to the time of employment at AAMU the candidate must have earned advancement to associate or full professor status

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop the department's potential by working closely with faculty on curricular, grant projects, and other innovative initiatives.
  • Work closely with the Dean, other College chairs and directors to implement University policies, procedures and programs.
  • Employ, supervise and evaluate office staff.
  • Manage the department budget.
  • Teach courses in the area(s) of expertise.
  • Encourage, support and provide faculty development.
  • Support and engage in fundraising and coordinate department efforts to secure external funding.
  • Administer, supervise and ensure faculty utilization and the equitable assignment of classes.
  • Evaluate and appraise the performance of department faculty.
  • Encourage and coordinate efforts for current online courses and programs and development of new degree programs.
  • Ensure outcomes assessments are administered, data analyzed and information reported to relevant internal units.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



Minimum Position Requirements (including certifications, licenses, etc.):

  • Doctorate in English or a related field of English.
  • Must have earned the rank of associate or full professor with at least three (3) years leadership experience working with faculty and students including but not limited to coordinator or director of an academic program, or a department chair, or other leadership position in an academic unit in a college or university.

Preference will be given to candidates who are able to articulate an active research agenda or grant writing, agenda/vision for leading the department and demonstrate contributions in the field of English.

Strong verbal and written communication skills
Excellent inter-personnel skills
Demonstrated strong leadership and supervisory skills
Fiscal management skills
Ability to engage in collaborative decision process.
Familiarity with administration of programs in Literature, English Education, Composition, Career or Professional Writing, Technical, Digital, or Creative Writing (graduate and undergraduate).
Awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.
Familiarity with academic processes and procedures including faculty evaluation, tenure and promotion, program development and approval, and student matriculation, retention and graduation.

The salary for each position is based on the grade/tier in which the position is placed, and the salary within the grade/tier is based on the number of years of related experience or number of years in the hiring rank.
