Education Programs, housed in UC Merced Extension, provides undergraduate and graduate coursework in the field of Education. Education Programs curriculum and certificates are reviewed and approved by UC Merced Academic Senate.
We began by offering professional development opportunities for in-service teachers and building collaborations with educators throughout the San Joaquin Valley. We now offer a fully accredited Teacher Preparation Program (California multiple and single-subject preliminary credential) offered in-person, hybrid, and fully online to aspiring teachers across the state of California.
What You Will Do
As the Assistant Director of Clinical Practice and CalTPA, directly reporting to the Director of Education Programs, will develop partnerships with local schools and collaborate with educational leaders throughout Merced County and the Central Valley. The Assistant Director will support expansion of the Teacher Preparation Program the meet the evolving needs of TK-12 educators. As Assistant Director you will lead the day-to-day operations as the coordinator of clinical practice placements, CalTPAs, and candidate academic intervention. The Assistant Director may facilitate learning as an instructor of clinical practicum coursework based on qualifications, including EDUC X303 Clinical Practice I (Initial Student Teaching) and EDUC X305 Clinical Practice (Solo or Co-Teaching). In addition, the Assistant Director will support outreach and recruitment of new teacher candidates, mentors, instructors, and cooperating teachers. The Assistant Director will also support the Teacher Preparation Program's continuous improvement and academic planning. The Assistant Director will be primarily responsible for the following components of the Teacher Preparation Program under Direction of the Director of Education Programs:
Coordinating Clinical Practice: Clinical Practice I, and III are aligned with the California Teaching Performance Expectations (TPEs). The Assistant Director will monitor teacher candidates, manage supervisors (i.e., university mentors, cooperating teachers), and collaborate with district partners for oversight of clinical teaching practicum. Provide documented evidence that cooperating teachers receive 10 hours of initial training, particularly around program expectations. The incumbent would be responsible for integrating program distinctives into a clinical practicum policy manual.
CalTPAs: In addition, the Assistant Director of Clinical Practice and CalTPA will lead all candidate support services, facilitation, and assessment of the CalTPA for the Teacher Preparation Program; including instructor orientation, candidate training, and candidate portfolio submission by deadline. The clinical practice coordinator would ensure the program is compliant with California Commission on Teacher Credentialing requirements for clinical practicum and CalTPA.
Academic Intervention: The Assistant Director of Clinical Practice and CalTPA will directly support the Director of Education Programs in the management of the Teacher Preparation Program's academic intervention of all enrolled teacher candidates, including teacher candidate difficulties related to academic integrity and normal progress. A part of academic intervention, the Assistant Director will provide documented evidence of teacher candidate academic intervention per policy. The Assistant Director will train and manage instructors early alert of candidate intervention needed.
This position is a full-time, 2-year renewable contract with an option for hybrid/remote work of minimum 3 days in office, 2 days remote after successful completion of probationary period.

QUALIFICATIONS
Basic Qualifications (required):
A minimum of eight years' experience teaching in public education (TK-12)
Teaching experience in the appropriate content area
Master's degree in related field
TK-12 California clear credential and English Learner authorization or CLAD
Knowledgeable in TK-12 human resources (policy and practice)
Knowledgeable in the California content standards, including Common Core, NGSS
Knowledgeable in the California Teaching Performance Expectations
Knowledgeable in current educational theory and culturally responsive instructional practice
Knowledgeable in support strategies for English learners and students with learning needs and demonstrates these effective strategies within their own classroom
Knowledgeable in strategies and techniques for program assessment and evaluation
Demonstrated commitment to mentoring teacher candidates
Demonstrated experience with teaching performance assessments; willingness to train with CalTPA
Preferred Qualifications:
12+ years of experience in teaching, leadership, or other clinical practice in TK-12 settings
TK-12 California administrative services credential
Administrative experience at principal level or higher
Pedagogical expertise, strong content knowledge, and positive communication skills
Appreciation and understanding of the cultural and linguistic diversity of students and the San Joaquin Valley
