The Student Services Specialist for Educational Talent Search is a full-time professional position. The specialist provides advisement to eligible middle and high school students, and performs a variety of academic services, including career counseling. The duties include informing students of college degree options, career and academic choices, and financial aid opportunities for college. The Student Services Specialist identifies and recruits secondary school students who have potential to achieve success in postsecondary programs, but need supportive services, due to low economic level and first generation in college status. The specialist is required to visit designated schools on a regular basis to counsel with and provide services to project participants. The Student Services Specialist also develops workshops and other appropriate presentations on subjects such as career development, study skills, college preparation, and financial aid to disseminate information relevant to prospective students. The successful candidate must be able to work effectively with a diverse group of students, parents, faculty, staff, and other personnel within the College and public-school systems. This position reports to the Program Director, Educational Talent Search. This is a grant funded position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor’s degree in education, social work, or related field is required. Two years’ experience in career counseling, recruitment services, academic advising, student services to individuals, or in public school teaching is required. Successful results of a background check are required.
Pursuant to College policy, it is an employment eligibility requirement for an applicant to meet the requirements of § 435.04(2), Florida Statutes, related to background investigations. Any person failing to meet the requirements of the statute will be deemed not qualified to hold employment in this position. A Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) approved background check will be conducted on every successful candidate as a condition of employment, and any person who fails to disclose any adverse information contained in the background investigation at the time of submitting the employment application will be disqualified from employment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Prefer experience working with people from culturally diverse low-income homes, and students with disabilities; coordinating educational projects and activities; documented public speaking experience; and working knowledge of Microsoft Office software (including Word, Access, and Excel).
SALARY RANGE: $35,000.00
