Assistant Teaching Professor in Interdisciplinary Social Science
Georgetown University: Main Campus: Georgetown College: Programs: Prisons and Justice Initiative
Location: Washington, DC
Open Date: Jun 27, 2022
Deadline: Sep 01, 2022 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time
Description
The Georgetown University Prisons and Justice Initiative (PJI) invites applications for a full-time non-tenure line (FTNTL) faculty position as Assistant Teaching Professor in Interdisciplinary Social Science.
Primary teaching responsibilities will be in the Bachelor of Liberal Arts (BLA) degree program offered to incarcerated students at the Patuxent Institution, a prison in Jessup, Maryland. In addition to teaching, the candidate selected for this position will also be responsible for (1) the development and oversight of the BLA social sciences curriculum and (2) direction of the BLA major in Interdisciplinary Social Science, including both course planning/coordination with main campus departments and programs and student advising and mentorship.
The social science curriculum in the BLA program is explicitly interdisciplinary, designed to expose students in a small program (25 students in each admitted cohort, max 125 students in the program at any given time) to the widest range of disciplinary perspectives and methodologies. All students in the program will take a two-course introductory sequence, which fulfills the College core requirement in social science; students electing to major in Interdisciplinary Social Science will then take a two-course methods sequence before moving on to intermediate and advanced electives and a capstone/thesis project. This position will be responsible for teaching the introductory and methods sequences on a regular basis. Initially, there will also be significant emphasis on curriculum development, as this position will be responsible for moving these courses from proposal to practice. In subsequent years, administrative responsibilities will shift to include more student advising and mentorship, including thesis direction. This position will be expected to collaborate and coordinate with main campus programs in the social sciences, which at Georgetown include departments of African American Studies, Anthropology, Economics, Government, Linguistics, Psychology, and Sociology, as well as interdisciplinary programs in Justice and Peace Studies and Women's and Gender Studies. Some additional responsibility for co- and extracurricular programming, with a focus on cultivating and responding to student interests in the field.
Course load for this position is five courses annually; standard teaching load for FTNTL positions in the BLA is 2/2/2 (Fall, Spring, and Summer), but this position is structured with a one course release to compensate for the significant administrative responsibilities. Initial term is three years, and the position is renewable. Per the Georgetown Framework for Full Time Non-tenure Line (FTNTL) Instructional Faculty, this position is eligible for merit pay and promotion (Ranks: Assistant Teaching Professor => Associate Teaching Professor => Teaching Professor).
We welcome applications from candidates with a PhD and teaching and research interests in any social science discipline or related interdisciplinary field. Demonstrated excellence in teaching and commitment to innovative and inclusive pedagogy are a must, as is the ability to teach both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.
