Job Description:

The highly visible incumbent is responsible for implementing the mission and vision of D’Youville and the Division of Student Affairs while directing student veteran support and recruitment efforts. In addition to providing administrative oversight to the Office of Veterans Services, this position will be required to travel for up to 8-weeks per academic year to complete recruitment efforts for the university. The successful candidate will be a self-starter who thrives amidst an ever-changing and unpredictable work environment and will have demonstrated skills in the areas of veteran student support and programming. The Director of Veteran Student Support and Recruitment will report directly to the Vice President for Student Affairs; is responsible for the departmental budget and will serve on various college committees. Evening and weekend hours may be required when the university is in session to manage workload and attend meetings and functions. The Director of Veteran Student Support and Recruitment works very closely with other Student Affairs offices to ensure that the College is “student-ready” and that every veteran student has the opportunity to be engaged outside of the classroom. This 12-month position is eligible for all D’Youville University benefits including the 32-hour workweek.

 

Primary Job Duties:

  • Oversee innovative veteran student support and programming efforts while collaborating with local and national partners
  • Develop policies and procedures that help ensure premier veteran student services
  • Work closely with the Wellness Lodge and Office of Student Development & Advocacy to coordinate the crisis management process for veteran students who have experienced severe distress
  • Work closely with the Vice President of Student Affairs on the advisement of the Student Veterans Association
  • Collaborate with the Office of the Student Experience on the administration of comprehensive student veteran orientation programs
  • Regularly counsel veteran students on their academic and life interests and passions
  • Act as the liaison for the university with government regulators and veteran affairs at the state, federal, and county levels
  • Manage and prepare for all audits from the Veteran’s Administration
  • Assist in completion of the certification of enrollment forms for veteran students claiming their GI Bill
  • Provide supervision, development, and feedback for the Office of Veteran Student Support
  • Attend bi-weekly 1:1 meetings with the Vice President for Student Affairs and monthly Student Affairs Directors meetings
  • Manage departmental assessment efforts and data gathering, respond to data/statistical inquiries from campus stakeholders, and ensure student development and satisfaction
  • Collaborate with the Office of Admissions to fully understand the university brand and entry requirements
  • Maintain at least 80 admission visits per academic year, both virtual and physical, to different military bases and veteran centers and support organizations to recruit new students to the university

Other Job Duties:

  • Ensure a student-centered departmental environment with a focus on customer service
  • Support the overall campus programming model by collaborating with faculty, staff, and SGA on initiatives and events for veteran students
  • Partner with the Director of the Student Experience to create intentional student touchpoints,
  • Serve as an atIXa trained investigator/hearing panel officer
  • Serve as an educator, mediator, reviewer when a student concern is escalated as a result of published policy, departmental process, or at the request of the Vice President for Student Affairs
  • Other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Student Affairs

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Understanding of the GI Bill
  • Demonstrated experience working in or supervision of veteran student services
  • Thorough knowledge and proven track record in veteran support, including policy development, programming and personal development
  • Strong cross-cultural, interpersonal, and writing skills necessary, including the ability to represent the university in a positive way to diverse populations
  • A demonstrated commitment to promoting a diverse and inclusive community
  • Proven ability to develop linkages with community partners through significant outreach efforts to support student success in and out of the classroom
  • Ability to innovative and create programs that supports student learning, leading to increased persistence and graduation rates across diverse student populations
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of individuals on campus and in all areas of the community to accomplish student life objectives
  • Ability to make sound professional judgments, often under deadline pressure, when dealing with student related issues
  • A proven ability to identify and address problems, exhibit competence in identifying and interpreting needed areas of assessment, display sensitivity regarding personnel matters and the ability to participate effectively in short and long-range planning
  • A strong commitment to the college’s mission to honor the catholic heritage and the spirit of St. Marguerite d’Youville working with students from across diverse cultures, backgrounds and faith traditions that promotes leadership and service

Experiential and Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Appropriate and applicable professional experience within veteran student services

Physical and Environmental Requirements:

  • Possess the ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Handle multiple tasks and priorities at once while solving problems and thinking innovatively
  • Retain administrative, organizational, supervisory, and budget-management skills
  • Maintain extended periods of sitting, standing, stair climbing, and maneuvering objects of substantial weight
  • Respond promptly in late-night hours while remaining alert
  • Willingness and ability to travel on behalf of the university
  • Must possess a student-centered personal philosophy and an amazing sense of humor        

Other Requirements:

  • Employment contingent upon legal authorization to work in New York State as determined by the Department of Labor
