Job Description




PRIMARY DUTY:  The Assistant Director of Residence Life, in collaboration with the AVP of R&A,  leads the vision, development, and implementation, of the student experience and student development initiatives within the residence halls.  Northwest’s Strategic plan focuses on student engagement and learning in and outside of the classroom, the co-curricular experience, and developing career ready students.  This position plays a key role in developing these initiatives within the residence halls.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  Provide vision and leadership in developing The Student Experience using effective residential learning communities and experiences that contribute to student success.

1. Leads vision, development, implementation, and assessment of Academic Learning Communities, First Year Experience, and upper-class experience to facilitate learning and development by a diverse residential population in collaboration with departments across campus such as the Office of Student Involvement; Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; Career Services; Admissions; First Year Experience program; Student Success Center; Wellness Services etc. 

2. Works in collaboration with the Operations and Auxiliary side of Residential & Auxiliary Services to implement processes and services within the halls.

3. Works collaboratively with Student Affairs and other university stakeholders to meet goals of the division. 

4. Directly supervises, mentors, develops, and evaluates two coordinators.

5. Oversees the selection, supervision and training of six full-time hall directors and complex directors and approximately 70 paraprofessional staff members.

6. Oversees RHA and NRHH in collaboration with department staff advisors to ensure a comprehensive leadership experience utilizing Student Affairs resources.

7. Leads training and selection processes for professional staff in collaboration with department leads.

8. Leads an environment focused on inclusive programming, policies, practices, and development.

9. Oversees BRIGEs, in collaboration with the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion office.

10. Back up for R&A as department representation on Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT).

11. Works in collaboration with student support offices including University Police and Wellness Services to provide support for students. 

12. Oversees several departmental budgets.

13. Responsible for staff evaluation process, student staff discipline and probation processes in collaboration with team members

14. Works in collaboration with the AVP on assessment, department goals, and Student Affairs divisional goals, driving department’s 4-Up and goal achievement.

15. Serves on duty coverage for all halls in rotation with the Leads.

16. Assists with crisis and student mental health issues leading the residential team in the halls.

17. Serves on University committees


WORKING CONDITIONS: Air-conditioned office. Some evenings and weekends required.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Directly supervise 2 Coordinators, Indirectly supervise 6 Professional Staff and approximately 65 student staff


TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Sedentary and physical work requiring the ability to lift and move 20 pounds on occasion. Ability to observe and interpret printed notices, policy violations and other documents. Ability to communicate in English effectively both orally and in print.

Preferred and Required Qualifications


Education: Bachelor’s Degree in College Student Personnel or related field.  

Experience: Five years progressive full-time Residence Life experience.   Experience supervising full-time staff.

Skills: Skills in interpersonal communications, leadership, conflict resolution, the ability to work with diverse populations, the ability to manage several projects simultaneously, and experience leading the vision and development of student experiences. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Software
