Tenure Track Position in Geophysical Exploration for Groundwater Resources

The Hawai‘i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, seeks  applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Researcher. We are  looking for individuals to apply and develop cutting-edge electrical geophysical exploration  techniques to quantify groundwater resources and characterize structures affecting  groundwater storage and flow in volcanic island settings, with special emphasis on processes and conditions relevant to sustainable water management in the State of  Hawai’i.

The Hawaiʻi Institute of Geophysics and Planetology (HIGP) is a multi-disciplinary unit in the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM), a R1 research university and Minority Serving Institution with a very diverse and multicultural environment.

HIGP is engaged in research, technology development, teaching, workforce training, and service in cutting-edge oceanographic, atmospheric, geophysical, geological, and planetary sciences and engineering. HIGP maintains a diverse earth sciences faculty involved in a broad range of research including volcanology, groundwater hydrogeology and geochemistry, geothermal resources, and both direct and remote sensing of planetary processes.   

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Pursue and obtain substantial extramural funding to support their vigorous research program.
  2. Serve as a resource to other State of Hawaii agencies responsible for management of the quality and sustainability of Hawaii’s groundwater resources and actively engage in cooperative investigations with those agencies where appropriate.
  3. Regularly publish findings in appropriate peer-reviewed journals and discipline-specific publications.
  4. Teach at least one undergraduate course per year in the field of groundwater resource quantification and exploration. In addition, the candidate will offer graduate level courses in their field of specialism.
  5. Supervise graduate students and undergraduate students.
  6. Provide experiential learning/research opportunities for undergraduate students.
  7. Play a full and positive role in contributing, as a HIGP faculty member, to Institute governance.
  8. Play a full and positive role in contributing to, and promoting, a collegial, respectful, and welcoming environment for faculty, staff, students, and post-docs within the Institute.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Earned doctorate in a relevant discipline such as Earth Sciences, Geophysics, Engineering, or Physics obtained prior to appointment.
  2. Demonstrated experience leading electrical geophysical field data collection, data processing, and interpretation related to groundwater exploration.
  3. Demonstrated ability to publish research results in relevant disciplinary journals.
  4. Experience in pursuing external funding, grants and proposals.
  5. Ability to generate independent research reports.
  6. Commitment to excellence in teaching and/or mentoring students.
  7. Initiative, interest in scientific work, and adaptability.
