Job Description

Position Summary:

The Lab Manager will be responsible for maintaining a safe and compliant working laboratory environment for the School of Arts, Sciences and Education. They will manage and track training, order supplies, coordinate disposal of biological and hazardous waste, update the chemical inventory, supervise work-study students, and coordinate with institutional safety officers. The Lab manager will be responsible for Undergraduate Chemistry, Physics and Biology labs. The Lab manager will be eligible for the D’Youville’s 32-h work week initiative.


  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry or a related field
  • Computer proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet and database management, various scientific applications and hardware use. Must understand chemistry, basic chemical reactions and the hazards involved when working with chemicals and biological hazards.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, good telephone and email etiquette, and excellent organizational skills
  • Work experience in a laboratory setting is ideal


  • Maintain and organize all Undergraduate Chemistry, Physics and Biology laboratories, chemical and equipment inventories, and SDS library
  • Check lab equipment to ensure proper functioning. Coordinate with external suppliers as needed for inspections and repairs and maintain clear records of services
  • Work with faculty to identify a list of supplies for an upcoming academic semester, order needed supplies, receive deliveries, open boxes and store reagents as appropriate
  • Maintain and update chemical hygiene plan through collaboration with faculty and institutional safety officers
  • Attend chemical safety seminars/training/conferences as requested
  • Coordinate with institutional safety officers to ensure safe disposal of biological and hazardous waste in compliance with state and federal regulations
  • Coordinate with institutional safety officers before and during external inspections to ensure compliance and remediation when needed
  • Ensure annual laboratory safety training for all faculty that handle hazardous chemicals/waste
  • With the faculty assigned to a course, coordinate student safety training each semester and track compliance
  • Manage facilities tickets as necessary to ensure adequate cleaning and repairs
  • Coordinate with IT helpdesk to schedule lab computer repairs and updates
  • Prep for lab courses as requested by faculty
  • Test experiments as requested by faculty, edit and update experimental procedures as necessary
  • Investigate new lab equipment and other resources
