Job Description

Position is responsible for installation, troubleshooting, repairs, removal of decommissioned cables and maintains a full range of networking equipment. Tasks will include installing, terminating, and testing copper and fiber optic cables using state of the art test equipment. Position addresses issues of availability and reliability for data connectivity within the local area network and wireless network. Works directly with network and system administrators and other personnel to complete a wide range of tasks which include planning, scheduling, and coordinating work with labs and administrative departments. Position is the first level support for complex, data network and communication systems that are rapidly changing in support of the Institute's growth and development of new research opportunities.


(60%) Network Requests, Troubleshooting and Resolution

  • Diagnoses and repairs data networking equipment and connections to this equipment.
  • Patching and testing of new network drops throughout the Institute.
  • Identifies connectivity issues on Windows and Macintosh desktops and servers.
  • Responds effectively and efficiently to job assignments such as work orders, help desk tickets, as required.
  • Provides on the job training to end users or other technical personnel.
  • Insures adherence to and documentation of routine maintenance and schedules and databases.
  • Informs management of potential service level problems before they occur and communicate solutions.
  • Directs self and the activity of others during the repair and testing of the networking components, as required.
  • Schedules and prioritize work to accommodate IT and users' needs while minimizing impact on current operations.
  • Requires routine contact with other Institute department personnel.

(40%) Network Low-Voltage Cable Installation / Management

  • Performs new installation and testing of CAT and Fiber cabling - to include conduit and concealment materials
  • Maintain network MDF / IDF cabling and cleanliness to include ensuring labelling and cable management
  • Maintains accurate documentation to support current network connections database - maintaining network system monitoring with Solarwinds Network Performance Monitor (NPM).
  • Analyzes component requirements of networking systems hardware upgrades, including wireless hardware and cabling materials.
  • Assists with evaluations and recommendations of vendor products and services.
  • Provides planning and technical support for enterprise installations as required.
  • Coordinates and oversees vendor maintenance personnel and installations.



  • Minimum 2 years of progressively complex network cable plant installation and administration experience or equivalent combination of technical school education and experience.
  • Experience in using network cable running tools, to include fish tape/poles and pulls.
  • Previous work as a network technician with network end-point connectivity setup/troubleshooting experience
  • Familiarity with network analysis tools, such as Cisco Works, Solarwinds Network Performance Monitor.


  • Experience in running copper and fiber cabling at the plant and to end-points utilizing rigid conduit



  • High school diploma or equivalent



  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills appropriate for interactions with a broad array of individuals.  Interpersonal skills must include tact, good judgment, diplomacy, and flexibility to relate to diverse scientific research staff, faculty, executive management, administrative staff, and external contacts.
  • Ability to work as team leader, team member and team resource.
  • Proficiency in category 6/6A wiring standards and fiber optic cabling with experience in termination at distribution/endpoints. Splicing experience is a plus
  • Experience in pulling low-voltage cabling, fabricating, and installing rigid conduit materials
  • Must be detail oriented.


  • Hands-on experience in performing network switch configuration, including switchport access and trunk creation, changes.
  • Experience in pulling low-voltage cabling, fabricating, and installing rigid conduit materials


  • Must be willing to work in an animal-related research environment.
  • Satisfactory completion of the Institute's background investigation.
  • Willing to sign a confidentiality agreement
  • Due to the nature of this position, candidate will be required to be onsite 100%.


The incumbent will be constantly adjusting focus, grasping, hearing, reaching, seeing, sitting, talking, touching/feeling, walking analyzing, calculating, communicating, reasoning, and working inside.
