Executive Director, Stony Brook Simons STEM Scholars Program

Brief Description of Duties:
Stony Brook University is proud to announce an exciting new partnership with the Simons Foundation. The Stony Brook Simons STEM Scholars Program will be a training ground for the next generation of diverse leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and will vastly improve the pathway to STEM careers for underrepresented students at Stony Brook University.
The Stony Brook Simons STEM Scholars Program seeks an experienced leader to provide strategic direction, leadership and management for this new initiative. The Executive Director will be charged with overseeing the development and growth of the program with responsibility for the creation of a fully-supported, tight-knit community that has a life-changing impact on its participating students. Additional responsibilities will include:

  • Program Development: Incumbent, along with key stakeholders, will create and develop the program from conception to fruition, which will include:
    • Developing programmatic milestones, leading strategic efforts to ensure continual refinement and development of the program.
    • Creating key policies and procedures to advance interest and success in the program.
    • Building a culture which constantly strives to better serve the students and alumni of the program.
    • Developing key messages about the program and providing a public voice for the program.
    • Determining the criteria for acceptance into the program.
    • Developing an objective and concise application process to include outreach, informational sessions, and program acceptance criteria.
    • Overseeing the recruitment and retention of students for advanced STEM studies.
    • Is charged with growing and overseeing a dedicated and talented group of full- and part-time faculty and staff and growing collaborations with other programs and resources across the campus.
  • External Relations and Outreach:
    • Serve as the primary advocate and spokesperson for the Program.
    • Outreach within the diverse communities, as well as with educators from across the region and nation to attract students to the program.
    • Internal and external outreach efforts with faculty and staff at SBU and other research institutions/related industries to help develop internship and mentorship opportunities for the program participants.
  • Budget and Key Metrics:
    • Manage and sustain a viable budget to support the varied programs.
    • Develop Key Metrics to enhance and support program success and to provide important data for ongoing evaluation of the program and its success in meeting defined milestones.
    • Reporting to investors and collaborating with University Advancement to seek support from foundations, individual donors, and granting agencies.
  • Collaboration with Marketing/Advancement/Human Resources/Enrollment Management/Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship Services:
    • Collaborate with University Marketing and Communications to create a marketing program that attracts students, faculty, members of related scientific research and development industries and the surrounding community to the program.
    • Collaborate with University Marketing and Communications to create and maintain the website to ensure high visibility of our programs.
    • Collaborate with University Advancement to ensure high quality stewardship and reporting to the Simons Foundation and other funders including but not limited to annual written and in-person programmatic and financial reports.
    • Collaborate with University Advancement on developing additional funding for the program.
    • Collaborate with HR regarding faculty and staff recruitment, retention, and employee relations matters.
    • Collaborate with Enrollment Management and the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship Services regarding recruitment and admission of students to the program.
  • Mentorship:
    • Create and maintain a viable mentorship/internship program for underrepresented students interested in pursuing education and careers in the STEM field.
    • Collaborate with Alumni Relations to create a vibrant alumni program that connects participants to graduates of this program as well as to the University at large.
  • Support:
    • Partner with Enrollment Management, the Career Center, Student Affairs, the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship Services and other key areas within the University; create a support network for the students which includes training, personal and professional growth workshops, mentorships, internships, future career preparation, and financial aid support guidance to ensure that students are given targeted guidance on how to attain their goals.
    • Partner with an internal advisory board to create an outstanding program ready to admit its first class in the summer, 2023.
  • Direct Program Staff Supervision:
    • Incumbent will manage a professional staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Master's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in a STEM field, Social Sciences, Higher Education, Management, Business Administration or related field. A minimum of seven (7) years of relevant strategic development experience to include program development. Demonstrated success in building and maintaining coalitions or collaborative enterprises. Experience interacting with diverse groups, including students, schools, and members of the public. Experience interacting with people from underrepresented backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications:
Additional years of relevant strategic program development, leadership, and management experience in a mission-driven organization. Experience managing budgets. Experience in higher education, including, but not limited to Alumni Relations, Enrollment Management, Career Services or Student Affairs. Experience within a unionized/public sector environment.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
