The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) in Syracuse, NY is building a faculty cluster in Water Research to complement existing expertise in this area. Here we invite applications for an academic-year (10 month) tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Applied Hydrology. This position will reside in the Department of Sustainable Resources Management (SRM), and fulfill a key capacity in watershed hydrology with an expected focus in ecohydrology of temperate systems (especially forest systems in natural and built environments). Candidates with supporting strengths in physical hydrology, aquatic and riparian ecology, biogeochemistry, hydroinformatics, and/or climate science are also desired. Candidates should have a collaborative research focus that supports freshwater science and ecology in the Northeast and globally. We seek a teacher-scholar who will fulfill essential teaching needs, with a strong commitment to engaging students in the classroom and through research mentorship at the BS, MS, and PhD levels. The successful candidate is expected to build an internationally recognized and extramurally funded research program in applied hydrology and participate in collaborative research with other faculty within the College to advance knowledge and promote stewardship of both natural and designed environments.

Responsibilities: The workload for this position is 30% teaching, 60% research, and 10% service. Specific teaching responsibilities include: 1) an undergraduate course in watershed science, 2) an upper division undergraduate/graduate level laboratory course in integrated watershed science and management and 3) a graduate level seminar in the candidate’s area of expertise. Service responsibilities include advising undergraduate students, mentoring graduate students at the Masters and Doctoral levels and participating in department, college and community service.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in environmental science, hydrology, forestry, natural resources management, geography, or other relevant field
  • Strong record of publication in peer-review journals related to physical hydrology, ecohydrology aquatic ecology, biogeochemistry, geosciences, environmental management, and/or related topics
  • Evidence of potential to secure external funding to support research

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One or more years of postdoctoral experience and a proven track record in applied hydrology
  • Evidence of effective teaching and mentoring
  • Evidence of strong lab research experience with some field research experience
  • Evidence of collegiality and dedication to professional service
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate science effectively to multiple constituencies
  • Demonstrated experience fostering an inclusive environment and incorporating diverse perspectives in research
