Job Summary:The successful candidate will join the GLOBAL Inclusive College Certificate Program and Instructional Design and Technology (ID&T) team. The GLOBAL Program provides wraparound support (academic, co-curricular, residential life) for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The Educational Support Specialist (ESS) will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and members of the ID&T team as well as support professionals in other university units. The ESS will support faculty in the design of instruction, materials, assessments and learning activities that exemplify Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and promote the use of evidence-based teaching and design practices as well as innovative uses of learning technology for teaching and learning.

A qualified candidate will have project management skills including managing multiple projects at once. They will be self-motivated with the demonstrated ability to work independently and take appropriate initiative and also have strong problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
MAJOR DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential

• Makes recommendations for modifying instruction, assessment and learning activities based on the needs of neurodiverse students and best practices.
• Designs learning materials, assessments, and learning experiences based on the principles of Universal Design for Learning.
• Consults with teaching faculty on ensuring the classroom environment supports neurodiverse learners.
• Co-teaches class sessions with faculty to model teaching practices that enable all students to learn.
• Provides professional learning to faculty regarding best practices in inclusive learning design, material development, assessment development, and teaching practices.
• Provides training in UDL/neurodiversity to other staff supporting the GLOBAL Program.
• Collaborate with other professionals to consult Peer Mentors, tutoring with this groups,

• Develops instructional plans, materials and assessments that exemplify UDL and other established best practices.
• Designs creative ways to allow students to showcase their skills through less traditional mediums.
• Adapts existing instructional materials, learning experiences and assessments to best meet the needs of neurodiverse students.
• Practicing active listening by giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, and asking questions as appropriate.
• Collaborates with faculty in the development of instructional plans, materials and assessments.
• Uses logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
• Identifies problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.

Knowledge:

• Demonstrated understanding of research-based assessment practices required to best evaluate neurodiverse students' content and skill knowledge.
• Detailed knowledge of relevant laws and government regulations related to the support of neurodiverse population.
• Comprehensive knowledge of and strategies for aiding faculty in sensory processing, cultural sensitivity, and strength-based approaches to teaching.

Abilities:

• The ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand.
• Ability to negotiate and manage conflict/dispute resolution processes.
• The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.
• The ability to come up with multiple ideas about a topic.
• Ability to create and maintain an atmosphere of inclusive excellence that celebrates our diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and perspectives.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

• Required: Master's degree in instructional design, special education or a comparable field.
• Preferred:
  • Formal learning in UDL.
  • Formal training in supporting the educational needs of neurodiverse students

Experience:

• Required: Minimum of three years exempt level experience in related environment.
• Preferred: Experience in higher in education

Pay Rate:Up to $56,792/year commensurate with qualifications
