Job Description


The Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (ADRDL) at South Dakota State University (SDSU) invites applications for a 12-month, 100% time, tenure track, Diagnostic Veterinary Anatomic Pathologist faculty position as an Assistant, Associate or Full Professor based on candidate qualifications including academic experience and service, and Departmental, College and University standards. The laboratory is an AAVLD accredited, full service laboratory within the Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Department (VBSD). A high proportion of the caseload is focused on diagnostic testing in food-producing animals, but the laboratory receives submissions from a diverse range of species and case types. The ADRDL is housed within a new, state-of-the-art facility, and encompasses various diagnostic sections including Molecular Diagnostics, Serology, Food Safety, Bacteriology, Clinical Pathology, Histopathology and Virology. The ADRDL is a Tier 1 laboratory within the USDA National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN), and a member of the Food Emergency Response Network (FERN), FDA Genome "Trakr" Program, and Veterinary Laboratory Investigation Response Network (VetLIRN). Two veterinary pathology positions are open to be filled.

The Department is within the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences and the position will report to the Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Department Head. In addition to the ADRDL, the Department includes the Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine, which is a 2+2 DVM program in collaboration with the University of Minnesota. The VBSD also includes an active and highly collaborative research environment with recently renovated research facilities.

The duties of this position are 70% diagnostic pathology service within the ADRDL primarily relating to livestock diseases significant to South Dakota and the region, 20% research and 10% advising and teaching. Diagnostic service includes necropsy and case coordination responsibilities, analyzing diagnostic data, generating case summaries, and consultation with submitting veterinarians and animal owners. The caseload is approximately 80% food animal and 20% miscellaneous including canine, feline, avian, wildlife, equine and zoo species. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to diagnostic service, and excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential. Participation in scholarly activities such as collaborative research and scientific presentations and publications are expected along with some teaching responsibilities. Supervision as a section leader based on interest and experience may be assigned. Candidates who have completed residency training and are studying for boards will be considered.


  • DVM degree from an AVMA accredited veterinary college or successful certification in the foreign graduate equivalency examination (ECFVG);
  • Documentation of a minimum of 3 years of formal training in veterinary anatomic pathology (e.g. residency and/or MS/PhD in veterinary pathology);
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with other individuals and agencies, and effective interpersonal skills;
  • Effective communication (verbal and written) skills.

  • MS or PhD degree in veterinary pathology or related field;
  • Board certification in Anatomic Pathology, or eligibility for the Anatomic Pathology board examination;
  • Experience in diagnostic veterinary pathology and food animal pathology;
  • Clinical veterinary practice experience with a focus in food animal production;
  • Experience in an academic setting (e.g. collaborative research, teaching, student advising, outreach);
  • Supervisory experience.
