The Department of History, Philosophy and the Social Sciences at the Rhode Island School
of Design (RISD) invites applications for a full-time, two-year term appointment in Environmental Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor
in Residence starting in fall of 2022.Rhode Island School of Design recognizes diversity and inclusion as fundamental

service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.We seek candidates who can
demonstrate quality undergraduate teaching, teach broadly in their field, and represent various aspects of their discipline within the
department.We seek a scholar whose work speaks to the social, political, and economic dynamics inherent in
environmental and sustainability issues, and an interest in how the work of artists and designers intersect with socio-environmental issues.
The ideal candidate would have specialty in political ecology, environmental racism /environmental justice, environmental ethics,
environmental history, environmental geography, technology and nature, and/or possible expertise in digital tools. We would welcome
colleagues whose work engages with historically underrepresented communities. All candidates should demonstrate quality teaching, and have
the ability to contribute to our undergraduate NatureCulture Sustainability
Studies (NCSS) concentration as well as the Master Degree in Nature/Culture
Sustainability Studies.Required Qualifications
The suitable candidate will have undergraduate
teaching experience and a broad background in environmental social sciences and/or humanities. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in hand in an
appropriate field of the environmental social sciences or humanities (e.g., geography, sociology, anthropology, history, ethnic studies,
science and technology studies, or other relevant discipline) and be able to teach a graduate seminar.Department /RISD

Rhode Island School of Design is an undergraduate and graduate college of art and design with approximately
2,400 graduate and undergraduate students.HPSS is a multidisciplinary department within the Division of Liberal Arts at
RISD. Our students are art and design majors who take one third of their courses in the Liberal Arts. Learn more about the department here:

Responsibilities
Full time faculty teach six courses a year: two lecture courses (capped at 25 students), one innovative
5-week wintersession course (21 students) one seminar (capped at 15) and two sections of our required first year seminar on Issues in
History, Philosophy and the Social Sciences (designed differently within specific parameters by each faculty
member).Term Appointments function as full members of the department; they participate in departmental decision-making
