The University is ranked in the top 20 in the UK in both the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022 and the Guardian University Guide 2022. Globally, the University is consistently ranked among the top 200 universities in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and also ranks 12th in the UK and 57th globally in the latest Times Higher Education Impact Rankings.

The School of Social Science is a home of world leading research and first-class education.  It is a research-intensive academic unit engaged in research across its three disciplines of Anthropology, Politics and International Relations, and Sociology. Our ambition is to continue to be recognised as an international leader in research, education, and impact of knowledge to benefit global society. The incoming Head of School will work with research leaders across the School and promote theoretical and methodological diversity in scholarship produced across the disciplines within the School.

The disciplines in the School are highly ranked in the UK. For example, Anthropology is ranked 5th, Sociology 10th, and Politics and International Relations 19th in the 2022 Guardian University Guide; in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide, Anthropology ranks 8th, Sociology 16th, and Politics and International Relations 25th in 2022.

At present, the School comprises 49 academic staff, with further colleagues to join in all disciplines in 2022, 7 administrative staff, and over 60 PhD students. We have around 750 undergraduate students spread across the 4 years of undergraduate studies in Scotland. Moreover, we offer 19 one-year Masters programmes across our three subject areas, which attract over 100 students each year, many of them from overseas. The numbers enrolling in Masters programmes are expanding rapidly.

The School is a research-intensive unit aiming for global societal impact. Our research staff engage in a wide variety of topics in Social Science, while also conducting interdisciplinary research. Staff regularly win grants from UK, European, and global funders to support their research. All research staff were submitted to REF 2021 with strong submissions in all units.

The School enjoys an excellent reputation for its undergraduate and postgraduate teaching provision. We are proud to deliver high-quality teaching drawing on the latest research and developments in the related scientific fields as well as innovative delivery methods and creative solutions to assessment, employability, and field work. All the School's disciplines recruit amongst the most highly qualified students in the UK, and the School's performance with regard to teaching quality, student continuation and completion are all exceptional.

Candidates must hold a PhD in a relevant subject and be a dynamic, collegial, and creative individual and an outstanding communicator, who wishes to embrace the opportunities of leading the School towards fulfilling the University's Aberdeen 2040 aims.  You should be ambitious in your vision for the School, be able to build on our track record, further develop the School's research culture, and be prepared to lead change to meet requirements of students, staff, research funders and the organisations we interact with. We welcome applicants with a background in any of the School's discipline areas.

The School of Social Science embraces a diverse working environment and recognises the many benefits this can bring. Applications from individuals from across all of the equality protected characteristics are encouraged.
