Job Description

The newly created African American Studies program within the Division of Social Sciences, housed in the Marvin D. and June Samuel Brailsford College of Arts and Sciences at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU), invites applications for a full-time, nine-month position for the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor (tenure-track) beginning Fall 2022. Teaching lecture and seminar courses at the undergraduate level, conducting research grounded in any aspect of African and African-American Studies, as well as service to the department, college, university, and field. Specifically, we are interested in candidates whose research explores the Black experience that will engage our undergraduate students. We encourage applicants from various African and African American Studies-related fields whose work focuses on the interdisciplinary study of African-descended people, processes of racialization, or resistance in the US, the Americas, Europe, the Atlantic World, the Pacific World, and/or Africa. The PVAMU African American Studies Program uses a public history, global, and cross-disciplinary approach to examine the historical, cultural, economic and political legacies of the largest forced migration in human history.

Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in African or African American Studies (or a discipline within the Humanities or Social Sciences), show a strong record of publication or a clear potential for such, and have an active research program. Candidates will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring of undergraduate students, and a willingness to contribute to the scholarly life of the PVAMU African American Studies program. The Assistant/Associate Professor will have an opportunity to contribute in the building of the visibility and impact of African American Studies, as the College has planned new investments in the program. PVAMU is less than fifty-miles from Houston, Texas—a cultural center and dynamic city with rich Black cultural, social, and political opportunities.
